Re: N H - Teaspoons- Grimwade Unregistered Mark 3744

A clearer mark attributed to Nicholas Hearnden from a 1758 table spoon.

Re: Probably John Lambe but

Hi Trev, You are spot on with your observation on the Grimwade images. I only raised the subject in this case as Lambe was a fairly prolific maker and I have seen a lot of his marks, but never this one before. I suppose that this is why we get hooked on the subject of silver marks, there is always s...

Probably John Lambe but

Hi, This 1780 London table spoon has a makers mark IL, however the pellet separating the initials is in the form of an x. I am assuming it is a John Lambe mark but I have not seen this pellet before, has anybody else? Martin http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/marlo12/SAM_5031_zpsuxv2tqz6.jpg ...

Re: Snuff Box Maker

Thank you Amena for your observations. I have managed to get a pretty clear image of the other mark, but to be honest I still have no idea what it might be.

Re: Snuff Box Maker

Thanks to both of you. JayT I think you may be on to something here. The first initial could indeed be an E, I really do appreciate the research and effort you have put in to supplying this information. If I can I will try to add a sharper image of the unidentified mark.

Re: Snuff Box Maker

Hi JayT, It has the 950 Mercury head export mark which is very clear along with 2 other marks that I can't distinguish. I have added the best images I can get of these below. Snuff Box Maker

Hi, Can anybody help me identify the maker of this French snuff box. It has the initials SP separated by a crowned crescent moon. Many Thanks Martin http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/marlo12/SAM_4957_zps9jwpczyu.jpg http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/marlo12/SAM_4959_zps5unowdnw.jpg

What was it for?

Hi, Not strictly a mystery object, as this is plainly a travelling/campaign mug on stand, that would have been used with a spirit burner to heat up something. However what do people think its specific use was, could it simply be for heating and consuming a hot drink, heating water for use as a shavi...

Re: Chinese opium pipe.

Hi Trev,

No it is definitely not silver or plated. Quite heavy white metal, which unlike the item in the link you provided, it does not seem to tarnish. However I would be interested to know what the character marks mean, hopefully someone will be able to interpret them.

Chinese opium pipe.

Hi, I wonder if anyone can help me decipher these character marks on this Chinese opium pipe. The 2nd image shows the marks on the base, which I presume refers to the maker. The 3rd image shows marks engraved beneath the flip up lid, any help greatly appreciated. Martin http://i1250.photobucket.com/...

Re: Another 3 Prong Fork

Definitely London but I think a bit earlier 1753?. Could you post a close up image of the mark nearest to the fork prongs, which looks like it may be the makers mark.

Re: Scottish Provincial Towns - Order of rarity?

Hi, According to Richard Turner's "A Directory of Scottish Provincial Silversmiths & Their Marks" the scarcity is rated below. However I don't know how definitive this list is. What I do know is, that you will certainly find a lot more silver items with a Glasgow assay mark than you wo...

Possible Chinese pseudo marks?

Hi, I have a sifter ladle with pseudo marks, I am thinking possibly Chinese export marks but does anyone recognise them? Many Thanks Martin http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/marlo12/SAM_4929_zpst3g8rjbv.jpg http://i1250.photobucket.com/albums/hh521/marlo12/SAM_4931_zpsh8ou0oy3.jpg

Hi,

I don't think it is John Muns, as I believe he died in 1768.

What are the origins of this snuff box?

Hi,

I have this silver snuff box which is marked with a CH between two what appears to be St Andrew's crosses. Does anybody have any ideas on a country of origin and possible maker?

Many Thanks

Thanks for the observations everybody. I can see a case for the first letter being an E or a G.
