Re: Spoons Russia pre 1917 Help

Hi! I have stumbled before to this same question about the weight of the item (which is documented to be less than 8,5 grams as Postnikov wrote). I have seen before the same situation that according to the marks the item should weight less than this 8,5 grams but it is clearly over. I have not found...

Hi! I can add that the Paul L Paulson's book is one of the copies in english which is made from the Postnikova. There are some errors also in the Paulson's book. Your item is a sugar bowl, with typical round shape and ball feet. Quite often these bowl's have engravings with flower's etc but there ar...

Hi!

I am happy with the nice vase, the enamel seems in very good condition, probably it has been standing intact for those over 100 years. The enamel is also typical for russian silver of that period.

Hi!

I have to agree with Qrt.S, the marks are supposed to be russian marks so unfortunately it is most likely a copy of a known russian charka model.

Hi! In additon what Silverport mentioned can be said that the jug has been made by Moscow jewelry factory (the mark in the middle in cyrillic MJu?). There is a number in the mark in the middle but I can not see it, it tells which year the jug has been made. The number 28 is most possibly a catalog/p...

Hi!

I am sure you are correct on the kappa, in PL I could not decide if it is a chi or kappa but then it is a kappa. Aren't the dot's/dash's for the circular mark only?

Just to add that most likely it is not the one which you refer to (from 1870-1880) as he worked 30-40 years earlier but an unknown silversmith. It is typical that all the silversmiths are not known as the the number of silversmiths increased dramatically in later periods like 1908-1926

Hi!

In the picture it looks that the letter could well be 'Chi' for Odessa. The left bracket down might have not been struck well or has been worn out. In my references I didn't find the makers mark but you probably have found it somewhere else. I beaker is a typical vodka beaker.

Most probably you are correct, as there are silversmiths with same initials so the silversmiths mark on the spoon can be said to be unknown as for today.

Hi!

If I read correct the maker could be Mikhail Ivanovich Sinitzin. He used the initials MIS (cyr.) with a little different look of the letters but this could be another version of his mark. He became master in 1885.

Hi! The russian marking system on silver had very strickt rules. The basics of it is that all silver items made in russia should have four marks: - silversmiths mark - purity mark - town/district mark - assaymasters mark. Only exception is the silver items imported to russia (as also indicated by Qr...
