Re: Are any of these real marks?

Hi Peter, Thanks very much for your very fast response, as always. First, yes, unfortunately it is repaired. Secondly, as regards the marks, I've attached much better images for examination. The first of these shows the circular mark you couldn't figure out and looks like a partial primitive horse. ...

Are any of these real marks?

Hello forum, I have this Dutch commemorative spoon which has a variety of marks on it. Some I believe are pseudo marks, for example the 'IV', the 'U' and the Dutch provincial lion for 1st standard. Can anyone advise from the photo which are the real marks, perhaps, for example the 'X' date letter? M...

Re: Confusing marks on a buckle

I don't know how you do it - that's brilliant! I can see some residue of the shapes of an S and E, but even with the thing in front of me I can't see all the outlines of the letters. The contour of the stamp is certainly right. It really was a Friday-afternoon stamp, though stretching it around a cu...

Re: Confusing marks on a buckle

Hi Peter, Thanks for all this fascinating and rather complicated detail; it's very helpful indeed. I'm afraid we will be disappointed with the maker's mark, methinks. The mark in the top right hand corner of my second picture was the best I could achieve. It was badly stamped in the first place and ...

Re: Confusing marks on a buckle

Hi Peter, thanks once again for your authoratative response, and also for the Dutch name of this item and links. Taking each of your points in turn: 1) Rotterdam: Indeed, it's obvious now you tell me! 2) Rotterdam year script: Tardy says that for the years 1783-1807, the letters run A-Z, which for 1...

Confusing marks on a buckle

I'm a bit confused about this buckle and so I would appreciate some thoughts from the forum. I recognise a Dutch mark - the tax mark for large foreign items - but I can't place the others. The mark in the top right hand corner of my second picture is, I think, a maker's mark. However, it's on the cu...

Re: Dutch silver box - maker query

Dear Peter, that's really excellent, thanks. Looking at each and comparing closely with my mark, here's my thoughts on each one: ..26 - V overhangs W too much ..27 - Same issue as above and I can't see a dot above the I ..28 - this looks good; I, V and W all in the correct relative positions ..29 - ...

Re: Dutch silver box - maker query

Hi Peter,

I think you're right. Now, looking at the mark from different angles with your attribution in mind, I can see the vestiges of a V and a clover. Thanks so much for your response. It's very kind of you to offer me an image of his marks as well, which I look forward to.

Regards,

Silverk.

Dutch silver box - maker query

I have this Dutch pill box, dated 1823, but the maker's mark was poorly stamped. I believe the top left hand initial is an 'I' and the letter below it is a 'W'. The other two letters are indistiguishable to me. Minerva's head gives no clue to the assay office either. Can anyone help identify this ma...

Re: French maker's mark request

Thanks both for your help here, especially since your responses are so very detailed. I think blakstone's thoughts resolve the date problem rather nicely and leaves no further doubt in my mind.

All the best,

Silverk.

Re: What is the provenance of this Dutch spoon?

Hi AG2012 and Peter, Your information has moved me on a fair bit, thanks, even if we haven't buttoned down everything. Maybe someone can add more given what you have said. I'm very surprised that you managed to find where he was born. I personally don't think the crest is English, more French or Swe...

Re: French maker's mark request

Hi Zilver2, Thanks very much indeed for your excellent response. I have one question which puzzles me a little. Tardy says that the mark of the man looking right was introduced on 16th August 1819. If Aimée-Catherine Clérin's cup mark was used in 1817 only, why would this fineness mark be on the sam...

Re: What is the provenance of this Dutch spoon?

Hi Trev, Here you go. I read the Dutch as: 'Fijbrandes Jiettes Nauta is Geboren Den 9 Juli 1765 Overleeden Den 10 Februari 1790' - Fijbrandes Juttes Nauta was born 9 July 1765, died on 10 February 1790. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll295/kelloggs57/925-1000%20forum%20pictures/Whole%20spoon%20s...

What is the provenance of this Dutch spoon?

Hi, I have what I believe to be a Dutch spoon, made c1790. I'm interested in both the maker and the owner of the crest. I think the maker's initials are DW, where the 'D' is lopsided. Who is this and when were they in operation? The crest is interesting and, to me, rather confusing. The crest is for...

Who was the maker of this Austro-Hungarian skewer?

Hi, I have this Austro-Hungarian skewer made in Budapest in 1840, but I can't identify the maker. I would be most grateful for any help from the forum in doing so. Thanks in advance. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll295/kelloggs57/925-1000%20forum%20pictures/Skewer%20small.jpg http://i291.photob...

French maker's mark request

Hi, I'm trying to identify the maker of this item and approximately when it was made. I can see it was made in Paris post 1819 and is of 0.950 fineness. Unfortunately, I can't find a reference to the maker in the sources I've checked. Can anyone help identify the maker, please? Many thanks in advanc...

Re: Who is the maker of this spoon?

This is excellent. Having checked the maker's mark and Minerva based on your info confirms it is DD and Leeuwarden. The date letter hasn't magically appeared though, despite further detailed checking!

Thanks very much indeed Peter,

Who is the maker of this spoon?

Hello, I'm trying to identify the maker of this spoon. It appears to be stamped with perhaps a 'DP' below a star. There's also just a hint of what might be a V at the bottom, but this could be my imagination. I've provided three different pictures of the marks, all very similar, but perhaps with eno...

Request for Chinese character identification

Hi, I have this rather nice Chinese double-skinned napkin ring, but I can't read the character and can't establish whether it is a maker's mark or a fineness mark - I don't even know for certain if it is the right way up! It doesn't help that the mark isn't complete. I've had a look on the web and c...
