Re: Who was this American silversmith? - Fleming

A nice discovery, Trev! Looking at the General Armory, there's the following entry for "King": King (Mount Pleasance, co. Waterford; confirmed 1809, by Betham, then Deputy Ulster, to THOMAS KING, Esq., and the descendants of his grandfather, WILLIAM KING). Gu, a lion ramp. betw. three tref...

Who was this American silversmith? - Fleming

Does anybody know anything about this American Silversmith named 'Fleming'? I've attached a picture of his remarkably clear mark. It's stamped to the base of a small mug or cup. Many thanks. http://i291.photobucket.com/albums/ll295/kelloggs57/925-1000%20forum%20pictures/15-7e.jpg http://www.925-1000...

Re: Possible Sheffield maker G.H - help needed

Hi Trev, Thanks very much for your very informative reply. It certainly sounds as though George Hague could be the silversmith. Regarding the use of the cusped duty mark (including the trefoil), readers may be interested in the article from Tony Dove which he wrote in The Finial some ten years ago. ...

Possible Sheffield maker G.H - help needed

I'm trying to identify the maker of this folding fruit knife 'G.H', but I've searched various sources including the on-line facilities and can't find a reference to it. The combination of the trefoil duty mark and letter-box lion passant makes me think this is a Sheffield piece between 1797 and 1804...

Re: OSP item - is it a wine coaster & who's marks are they?

Thanks Trev, Well at least I have the comfort of knowing I haven't missed something. Now you have another example (I can send you additional pictures of the item by email if you want them). Just ask. My reference to Bradbury was because that's the only tome I have on OSP. My feeling is the same as y...

Re: OSP item - is it a wine coaster & who's marks are they?

Actually, to be accurate, there is a sort of border. The base is sunk about 7mm below the level of the vines and grapes, so technically a border, but not of the standard wine-coaster type.

OSP item - is it a wine coaster & who's marks are they?

I've had this item for some considerable time and I never got around to understanding it. I think it's Old Sheffield Plate (I'm sure you'll correct me if I'm wrong!). I've got some questions for the forum: 1) Is it a wine coaster and if not, what is it? The vines and grapes would certainly suggest i...

Re: Continental mark poorly stamped twice - what is it?

Thanks for all the responses so far and to Trev for rotating the marks. Taking the two main topics so far: 1) Magnifying the really really tiny mark, less than 1mm across.... Oh yes! I've managed to do it. I now have a picture about 10mm across which is just a smudge! No use to man nor beast, I'm af...

Re: Continental mark poorly stamped twice - what is it?

Hi AG2012, thanks very much for your suggestion. The shape is certainly suggestive of a real mark, but through the loupe it just looks like corrosion, I'm afraid. Nevertheless, I tried to take a photo, but the thing is barely 1 mm wide and I couldn't get a useful picture; I'd have to use a microscop...

Continental mark poorly stamped twice - what is it?

Hi, I've acquired this small tumbler, which I think is 18th century, continental. However, whilst the same, both marks are so poorly stamped I can't identify it. I've looked in Tardy and nothing seems to fit, so it may be a maker's mark. I think the lower one is slightly better and, not obvious on t...
