Re: Nicholson Family, Cork Silversmiths during the 18th & 19th c

This might shed light on John Nicholson and the wide streets commission's acquisition of houses on Castle Street in Cork in early 1791: FEBRUARY 10 1791 - [Advertisement] - NOTICE IS hereby given to all Persons who have, or claim to have, any Estate, Right, Title, Term, Interest, Use, Life, or Trust...

Re: Identifying STERLING marks

Thanks for that, Scorpio. The maker's mark is very clear and not at all like the mark accompanying the STERLING mark. I am told the item the mark is on is a flat covered dish with a crest and a motto. The motto is Ne vante ne foiblesse. As far as I can see this belogs to a Norman family - Goddes de ...

Yes, we already have an example. Others, of course, would be very welcome.

Re: Identifying STERLING marks

I came across this mark recently and it was ascribed to George Hodder. However, I had not seen it before and it looks a little out of character for Cork STERLING marks. Would anyone have an example from a piece we know to have been made by George Hodder? http://i1187.photobucket.com/albums/z399/Arge...

Re: Identifying STERLING marks

Indeed it does.

Is there any professional or family relationship between the two makers?

Re: Beal Family of Cork, Hingham Mass, and Boston

It appears that we might have to take the search to Hingham in Norfolk, England whence one John Beal went to Hingham. Mass in 1638 together with his family and two servants. One of his children was Caleb Beal born c. 1636 and died in 1717: http://aleph0.clarku.edu/~djoyce/gen/report/rr01/rr01_301.html

Re: Beal Family of Cork, Hingham Mass, and Boston

Also, as Quakers, the Beales may not have been able to enter a guild after c. 1680 because of the Test Act. By the 18th and 19th century in Cork the family had moved into shipbuilding. In New England, the settlement of non-conformists there came about so as to avoid civil constraints imposed by enac...

Re: Beal Family of Cork, Hingham Mass, and Boston

Many thanks for that. From the list of freemen of Cork the Beal family figures from 1710: Beale George Gentleman Beale George Beale James Beale John F. Esquire Beale Joseph 31/12/1739 Beale Joseph Hoare Merchant 20/6/1792 Beale Joshua 20/12/1739 Beale Joshua George Merchant Beale Samuel Merchant 13/...

Re: Identifying STERLING marks

Yes, the mark does look the same. The Nicholsons were in business between c. 1756 and c. 1830 with the partnership of John and Nicholas Nicholson in existence between 1797 and 1804. Joseph Gibson was in business 1784 to about 1820. However, the common use of this punch by the Nicholsons and Gibson m...

Beal Family of Cork, Hingham Mass, and Boston

I would appreciate any information concerning the Beal family of Cork and New England (Hingham, Mass, and Boston). The family appears to have been settled in the City of Cork by the mid 17th. By the late 17th century members of the family appear to have settled in Hingham, Mass, from where they move...

Worship according the Roman Rite provides for the use of spoons on two occasions: Ordinarily, at the offertory in the Mass when a condiment type spoon is used to place a small amount of water into the wine - this is sometimes called a scruples spoon. and By exception, and in the absence of other al...
