Re: Watch your smelter!

About to be melted, literally, this piece was about to be picked up by the representative of the smelter company when I flew into a rage, 1 ounce of pure gold or around 58 grams of 14k gold here: https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Etruscan revival watch fob, USA circa 1870, a few links have been...

Re: Need Your Eyes on an 18th Century French Object

I found a similar pie server with a brazilian silver coin that did not test for silver, it must be pewter as well. Maybe somehow people saw the coins and were tricked into believing the entire piece was silver, and so a profit was made? That is my current theory about these pewter objects with silve...

Re: Unknown Spoon - Lion (right facing) M A Lion (left facing)

Ancient Greek Coins ----- they have that style of "A" . I have seen it many times. Something looks influenced by Ancient Greece here, but I understand that this would not lead us to a maker, but simply the style of font. Ancient Greek Syracuse Tetradrachm 370-330 BC.

Re: WP Rat-Tail Hanoverian Hybrid Spoon?

Is it "William Shaw and William Priest" but only the top W and the bottom P are present in the hallmark because the spoon is so narrow the outside letters have been missed in the strike of the hallmark implement?

Re: Channel Islands Guernsey HI or IH?

The "lowercase v dot N" monogram is of a different style, composed of a series of tiny dots that I have noticed in German silver monograms from the 1700s. The "lowercase v dot E" monogram is carved in a cursive font and is of a more traditionally English Georgian way of engraving...

Channel Islands Guernsey HI or IH?

I have no idea if this is actually the unknown maker HI or IH from the Channel Islands Guernsey. The hallmark shares similarities with other hallmarks I have seen by this maker, but the stamp actually belongs to a group of makers or perhaps a family so it does vary slightly. If you look closely, you...

Re: Gorham? Lion Anchor G hallmark.

I've seen the butterfly motif on a pair of salt cellars, and I believe the best way to describe this is it was part of the "naturalistic" movement in silver circa 1860-1890 that displayed realistic images of nature including insects, leaves, birds, fish. Never seen it on a teapot before, a...

appreciate the help, for some reason will not clear my cookies and I cannot use that service. I must be misreading the stamp somehow. I promise I have tried everything to get these images enlarged. I will keep working on it.

Re: Italy 800 Box Platinum Button

The only other thing I wanted to say, other than to express frustration, was about the Platinum Button on this Cigarette Case. In 1935, Italy invaded Ethiopia and set up a government known as "Italian East Africa" which encompassed Ethiopia, Eritrea and other surrounding areas. I don't kno...

Re: Italy 800 Box Platinum Button

It looks like "24 symbol L-"

Ok so it is not a fist, it is the Roman Cruces symbol. And It is either LC or LT as the city abbreviation. It is certainly an "L" and then ?.

I still think the first 2 digits read "24."

It looks like "27 Fist 4" where the Fist is the symbol for Italy during 1930's.

Re: Could this be Gorham too?

Reminds me of the work of George Sharp, and I believe once you do a quick search for pieces by George Sharp the similarities are apparent. George Sharp worked in Coin Silver but the overall feel of the piece is very similar to George Sharp. I have noticed a few pieces over the years that are very go...

Re: Mystery Spoon - 1869 - AF - Lady Wings Motif

Yes I thought Germany candidate most probable. The date of 1869 seems a bit early as this spoon seems much more Art Nouveau style with the flowing lines and the image of the female form. Perhaps this spoon was ahead of its time, artistically. The other image seems like a British Family Crest with wi...

Re: Royal Order Of The Garter

Indeed, I could not identify the symbol at 6 o'clock, however I did notice the buckle at 7 o'clock. Also I just checked the "Coronet Of An Earl" and I was struck by the similarity between the two symbols. It is amazing how similar the crown on these spoons is to the generalized "Coron...
