Re: Gold(plate?) walking stick hallmarks

Oh, I don't mind digging but having somebody point the way sure helps. And I do appreciate it. The original manufacturer is worth a shot. They might have good records, they might have zip. We'll see. I knew from the start it was not solid gold. Not nearly heavy enough. It looked and felt more like g...

Re: Gold(plate?) walking stick hallmarks

Thanks, Francais! I dug around as you suggested. One of the umbrella and stick threads ( http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=38&t=30437&start=40#p82699 ) has an image of a very similar one from Goldsmiths' Stock Company of Canada flyer. It bears the number 201 which does suggest a ...

Gold(plate?) walking stick hallmarks

This walking stick I purchased is giving me a hard time in identifying its hallmarks. They don't seem to fit the norms. Any leads or info much appreciated. I was told it was circa 1923. That's all, unfortunately. Photo: http://www.yorku.ca/efenner/pix/goldhallmarkdetail.JPG http://www.yorku.ca/efenn...

Re: Walking Stick maker's mark J.N.?

Any idea on what kind of wood was typically used on such canes? The shaft is not very heavy and the grain is pretty fine. The handle is heavy and genuine stag horn - likely from Scotland, I expect. I use the stick at least once a week so I am debating adding an appropriate ferrule to it. It currentl...

Re: Walking Stick maker's mark J.N.?

Thanks, Trev. And thanks, Cuznerfan. I appreciate the information. Fast, too! Does that mean it was made in London vs. Birmingham? I'm not clear on that. What kind of stick would the aforementioned Nussbaum stick be? A middle-class gents? Upper class? City? Country? I have no idea and would like to ...

Walking Stick maker's mark J.N.?

A walking stick I bought on the weekend bears hallmarks on a decorative band on the shaft as Sterling silver, made in Birmingham, England in 1896. It also has the initials J.N. in a rounded rectangle. None of the online directories have this one (that I can determine) so I am turning to this communi...
