This is from an embroidery scissor that was manufactured in Solingen for the Griffon Cutlery Works in New York. I have not been able to identify the "S" with the small "H" within. It doesn't appear to be an American mark. Thought it might be the silversmith's mark from Solingen. ...

Thank you both for your quick replies. OEL, I appreciate the clarification on the date letter and city of registration. I agree that it may be IV or even JV. Where might I find a sample of Willem de Vries' mark? I looked thru www.zilver.nl for DV, IV, and JV with no clear matches.

Not sure of the maker's mark for this silver clip. The first letter is slightly obliterated. Has the crowned 3 Saint Andrew's Crosses, with a date letter N for either 1733 or 1758 (a second reference says 1747 or 1772). The maker's mark looks like DV.
