Re: Need help identifying marks

The first mark is a combination of the assay office (the mark at the top), which in this case is Cairo, and the silver content expressed in Arabic numerals: ۸۰۰ is 800.

Re: Duty Mark 1880s Birmingham

Hi and welcome to the forum. The maker's mark is LEN for Lewis Edwin Neale of Northampton Street, Birmingham, variously described as a jeweller and "ring manufacturer". Birmingham Assay Office had a particular form of their hallmark for use from around 1882 on items which were below the du...

Re: 2021 Platinum Jubilee Hallmark

I think that "For sale abroad" should probably be read as a quote and "additional mark" just refers to the coronation mark; i.e. there was no special "For sale abroad" mark. In passing I note that the 1977, 2002 and 2012 jubilee marks were all used for one year only in ...

Re: 2021 Platinum Jubilee Hallmark

I note that the BHC are running a poll via the National Association of Jewellers (NAJ) web site. My comment would be "Why 2021 when the anniversary is not until 2022?"

Re: Makers mark help on old brooch

You ask what is it made of and then you identify the sterling (lion passant) mark - that gives the answer. Note that the enamelled part may not be silver as it is attached to the hallmarked backing piece, but made separately. The other 2 marks are the anchor mark for the Birmingham Assay Office and ...

Re: Help identifying maker's mark

Hi and welcome to the forum.

Yes, it's Sheffield 1997. The Assay Offices do not publish details of makers'/sponsors' marks so your only course of action would be to contact the Sheffield Assay Office directly. Their web site has a "Contact Us" link.

It's 1857, but the case maker, LH, is not listed so I cannot give you a name.

Re: Identify makers mark

Yes, this is London 1882. The mark on the left is the duty mark and that on the right is the London uncrowned leopard's head. There is no maker's mark in your picture. Is it in the same position on the other arm?

That was one of the possible names which I had found to go with this set of initials, but with no evidence. I have noted that the mark has been seen on imported compacts dated 1933 and 1937.

Re: Recent purchase and new (to this site) makers mark...

Chester never used "sterling". This is a mark applied by either the manufacturer, importer or retailer in order to make it acceptable / saleable in places where "sterling" is the marking norm. As there is no hallmark WJP may just be a maker with the same initials as Pellow or thi...

Re: Marks don't seem to "jive"...

You need to look at the full hallmark, not just the date letter, then you will see that there is a distinct difference between the two date letter cycles. It may be disloyal of me, but the British date letter charts on our site here are not particularly good. They only show the date letters, omittin...
