Re: Help with makers mark on skewer (with pics)

WC is William Chawner, the second known silversmith of that name but no relation to the first. This date letter "b" is for the assay year 1817/18 and as you have noted the crowned leopard's head is for London. The bird and crown engraving is the armorial of the the original owner of the sk...

Re: Silver Coin Holder

The holder mechanism has been replaced for some reason, but probably like-for-like. It's actually made for half sovereigns which are about the same diameter as a modern penny.

Re: Lion's head anomaly

I agree - It's the "D" of 1839 so no anomaly with the duty mark. Variations in the "constant" components of a hallmark are to be expected as the punches were hand-made and would have been re-made fairly frequently to avoid having to use worn punches.

Re: London hallmark, 1733?

I don't think that is a London mark under the overstamps. The punch outlines are wrong, the crown on the leopard's head is too tall and the style of the letter, if it is an S, is also wrong. My exemplar of a London 1733 mark shows how it should be: http://www.silvermakersmarks.co.uk/Dates/London/173...

Or it could be a toasting fork. At full length it would keep your hand farther from the flame.

Re: Hallmarks Sterling Spoon

Hi and welcome to the forum. The other 2 marks are the crowned leopard's head mark for London and the date letter which I think is probably P for 1770/71. WC is probably William Collings. The words are Latin; I can read the top word, fortiter, which means bravely, but I'm not sure of the other two. ...

Re: J star S maker's mark

That is definitely the J*S mark which is probably John Scofield. The problem with identification of marks during the mid-Georgian period is that two essential registers have been lost, namely the 1739-1758 Smallworkers' Register and the 1758-1773 Largeworkers' Register. Your tankard is dated 1773 an...

Re: button Birmingham Date ?

Reference books for hallmarks do not show exact representations of all sets of marks, although they don't tell you that; there can even be variations within a single year. The orientation of the Birmingham anchor does not seem to have been specified anywhere but has been derived from observation. I ...

Re: button Birmingham Date ?

The other aid to dating Birmingham is that the anchor is on its side 1859-1899. If 1924 the anchor would be upright.

Re: 925 Hallmarks Help - Virgin Post!

Hi and welcome to the forum.

The date letter Z in your Birmingham hallmark is for 1999. Unfortunately I cannot identify SJ as the assay offices do not publish information of this sort. We have to glean small details as we go along and add knowledge piece by piece.

Modern platinum marking includes a millesimal fineness number but when platinum hallmarking was introduced in 1975 there was a single standard of 950.

Re: Import Mark London Office 1918

9 and .375 both indicate 9 carat gold: 9/24 = 0.375. The punch shape is normal and does not indicate an import; this shown by the London uncrowned leopard's head being replaced with the same import mark as used for silver.

Re: George Hape Sterling Date Mark

I have never been convinced that such a person as George Hape actually existed. I note that this site attributes a GH mark to him but, in my opinion, this is almost certainly the mark of Harrison Brothers & Howson with GH being the initials of the company's principal, George Howson. Hape does no...
