Re: Silver plate? Biscuit barrel? Tea caddy?

It obviously had some specific purpose originally, but it eludes me I'm afraid. The "S" certainly does not stand for 1907. This mark is not a hallmark so hallmarking date rules do not apply. In any case none of the assay offices used "S" in 1907 anyway. Based on observation we fi...

Re: Silver plate? Biscuit barrel? Tea caddy?

silvercollection.it has an illustration of a mark which appears to be very similar - see the (B&S) (S) (EP) mark here. It is listed in the Unidentified section.

Re: Vase Birmingham & London Hallmarks?!

These goblets are made by Camusso of Lima, Peru. The writing is Spanish and indicates that it is a Peruvian company (Industria Peruana) and that it is sterling silver (plata esterlina).

Re: Robert Jones Teaspoon?

I think it's more likely to be an Exeter mark, possibly Richard Jenkins, who was known to be active at the end of the 18th century (first mentioned in Exeter records 1764, died 1807).

Re: Edinburgh silver teaspoons, need help to id.

I don't think there is any basis for expecting AW and SW to be related. The pattern is not especially rare and the monograms do not seem to be the same so the different pieces were not necessarily bought by the same family. Looking again at the date letter I think you were right that it's 1852 - so ...

Re: Edinburgh silver teaspoons, need help to id.

The Edinburgh Incorporation of Goldsmiths site has two similar SW marks, one noted with an 1854 date and the other with an 1881 date. Both are "Unidentified". The 1854 one is probably the same as yours (which is actually 1851, not 1852).

It is entirely normal for London silver not to have the crowned leopard's head mark at this time, but I have never seen a Sheffield mark without the crown. So I would go with Solomon Royes.

I could not find him in the 1861 census, but sometimes names get mis-read in transcription so his absence is not 100% conclusive.

Re: Seeking Information on Charles Elkington

The 1841 census has Charles Elkington, 25, silver plater, living in Stratford Road, Sparkbrook, Aston, Warwickshire with Elizabeth Elkington, also 25. Note that for the 1841 census adult ages were often only given to the nearest 5 years. The 1851 census has Charles Elkington, 38, "agent, bronze...

Re: Please Help? E CO ? Sterling Candle Holder

This is not for candles. It is called an épergne and should have glass bowls, for sweetmeats, etc., on each of the arms and the centre. Variants have vases for flowers. E&Co are Elkington & Co of Birmingham. They were especially known for their electroplate, being pioneers in the process. T...

I agree that Culme has several S.S mark listed, but my feeling is the the most likely match is Samuel Smith. The aspect ratio of the mark and form of the letters looks most like Smith's 1893-registered mark.

I reckon this is actuallyHenry Stratford Ltd, but that the mark is a triple-strike, the first being partial and the subsequent attempts not being properly lined up resulting in a doubling of the right hand arm of the H with pellet and then a distortion of the final LD.

In the 1861 census William J Dingley aged 3 was living with his parents, Alfred Dingley 38 and Elizabeth Dingley 36, at 172 Spring Hill, Birmingham. Alfred's occupation is Fitter [not sure about this], Grocer & Provision Dealer. They are at the same address in 1871; Alfred is just "Grocer&q...

Re: Miniature silver photo frame, need help to id.

Yes, the sponsor's mark is not present; neither is the assay office mark. This usually happens when there is more than one part to the full item - one piece having a full hallmark and subsidiary parts having only partial marks. In this case I am not sure what sort of piece might be missing. The hall...

Have you considered Grimwade's #1628 mark for John Reily (smallworker), entered 13.6.1823?

I assume that you have taken the information which you quote from my silvermakersmarks web site. You should note that the dates given there are only dates for which I have seen the mark. So 1969-1977 is not any sort of absolute dating. Furthermore the PG mark of Perry Greaves Ltd is PG in a conjoine...

The maker is William Hutton & Sons Ltd of Birmingham.

I would suggest that the handles are designed to fold against the sides of the cup so that it will fit into a travelling container - unless someone else has another idea?

A virtually identical mark to that of James Thornton was registered in 1880 by John Troup & Sons, watchmakers & jewellers, of Hatton Garden, London.
