Re: Is it a Sheffield hallmark?

I haven't joined in this discussion before now because I am also at a complete loss to explain these marks. However the date stamp is definitely from the earlier period. This form of the combined crown and date letter (crown over letter in a cut-corner rectangular punch) was used from 1822 to 1828. ...

Re: Help, please, with 2 silver spoons

Your spoons are very definitely sterling. The lion passant is a guarantee that the silver has been assayed independently and meets the sterling standard (.925). The maker's mark is that of Thomas and George Hayter (a father and son partnership) and the date letter "f" shows that it was ass...

Re: Help with hallmark on bracket I dug up

It must date from 1998 or later because there is no date letter. These were made optional in that year by an amendment to the 1973 Hallmarking Act.

Re: Small 3" Bon Bon Spoon? Joseph Taylor 1816?

Birmingham 1790 and 1816 hallmarks, which use upper case S and lower case s respectively as date marks, are (in my view at least) impossible to tell apart. In addition there were several IT makers' marks spanning the period so there will always be room for doubt. Joseph Taylor 1816 seems as good an ...

Re: Worn marks on Gravy Ladle - Goat Monogram

I think that this is more likely to be Robert Sallam of London. Newcastle marks before the duty mark was introduced did not have the "pip" at the bottom of the lion passant mark so it can't be Newcastle.

I have seen this mark before but have not identified it. Unfortunately the Assay Offices do not publish information about sponsors' marks so we have no way of making the identification.

Re: Small spoon, is this London? And what year?

The hallmark is fine for London 1792. Note that there was some variation in punches depending upon the size of marking required. Published hallmark illustrations do not take these variations into account.

Re: Small Vest Case - Need Help With Makers Mark +Date

No problem with the date - it's 1900/01. But the sponsor's mark is a mess; it appears to be an overstrike where a replacement mark has been punched on top of the original. There is nothing suspicious about this and there are several possible explanations, the most likely being that a batch of vestas...
