Re: Identifying STERLING marks

The Cork family name was Nicholson per some sources including an advertisement inserted by the Nicholsons in the Hibernian Chronicle, 1791 or Nicolson per other sources including marks shown in 'Collecting Irish Silver'. The photos of your spoon are far too small and unclear to see exactly what the ...

Re: The Earliest Known Cork Maker's Mark?

I think you mean an excerpt from the Rose of Tralee (website) rather than Rose of Dundee! The Alsona Miaghe chalice is in the Cloyne Diocesan Centre, Cobh, Co. Cork according to A History of the Medieval Diocese of Cloyne. I've no idea if it's possible to view it but you can contact the centre at 02...

Re: Robert Goble of Cork

Karl, I concur with the view that the spoon is far more likely to have been made by Robert Goble the younger c.1720s. I say Robert Goble the younger because I have not seen evidence to assert that he is a son of the elder. He may in fact be a nephew, or even a cousin. Any thoughts on this point by ...

Re: Robert Goble of Cork

Douglas Bennet says this style of spoon with the handle turned up at the end and a ridge down the centre was introduced about 1710. The online seller suggested c1705 for this teaspoon which is just too early. As Trev said, it's difficult to be certain. Robert Goble Snr was probably dead by 1722 acco...

Snuff box - maker I.E

This George III Irish silver snuff box, which I recently repatriated from San Francisco, is by a maker with the initials I.E in an oval shaped reserve (not quite an oval but for simplicity I'll call it that) but does this mark belong to James England, John Egar, John Egan or the elusive John Ebbs? I...

Re: Identification of Maker?

Really need sharper photos of the marks to check the date from the Harp Crowned and Hibernia marks but an educated guess is 1754. A nice loving cup. Douglas Bennett lists him as being a Quarter Brother in 1750 and a Freeman in 1751.

The mark is that of Michael Fowler, a mid 18th century Dublin silversmith.

Re: Unknown Irish maker - IE in unusual punch

Sorry to have been the bearer of bad news Ben. The sugar bowl is quite similar to one Bennett shows with forged marks for 1798 with the IE mark. Disappointing yes but don't feel too bad about it, Bennett says many an antique dealer has been caught out by these forged marks.

Re: Provincial Irish Sugar Tongs

William Teulon apparently did use STERL g as mentioned in this thread (click the first link in Argentum's post), although not incuse in this instance. http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=31543 Douglas Bennett shows WT in a rectangular reserve (mark 150) for William Teulon in Collecting Iri...

Re: Unknown Irish maker - IE in unusual punch

In my previous post I meant to say 'initials IE encircled by small beads' not initial E encircled by small beads'. Here is one of the five examples of the forged IE mark shown by Douglas Bennett. http://i1288.photobucket.com/albums/b500/centauri1/Irish%20Silver/Irish%20Silver%202/Forged%20IE%20mark_...

If you purchased this sugar bowl from an auction house or dealer, return it immediately and hopefully you will get your money back.

Re: Unknown Irish maker - IE in unusual punch

Ben, sorry to have to tell you that the initial E encircled by small beads is a fairly modern forged mark. Douglas Bennett refers to this mark in Irish Georgian Silver, pages 241-2 saying both the Dublin and London Assay Offices are aware of it.

Re: Unknown Irish maker - ID in serrated punch

Hi Ben, I've never seen this maker's mark before and can't trace any reference to it. Taking into account the decoration, Harp Crowned and Hibernia marks, I'd date these sugar tongs to 1785/1786 just before the Harp Crowned appeared in an oval reserve, which occurred in 1787. Isaac Davies began his ...

Re: Set of 6 Cork silver spoons

Thanks Trev. More and more information is appearing online, much of seemingly driven by genealogists and people's desire to trace their roots. Cork City Council is particularly active in placing archives online. Thanks for that reference. It could indeed be James Heyland's widow. I'll see if I can d...

Set of 6 Cork silver spoons

This set of six small spoons with Old English style terminals seems to be by James Heyland of Cork. In Collecting Irish Silver , Douglas Bennett lists James Heyland's working dates as 1784-1812 while the authors of Cork Silver and Gold mention him as operating from 39 North Main Street, Cork during ...

Since I posted the comments above, I have seen some bright cut spoons by John Irish where he used a STERLING mark in a serrated reserve in association with his 'I.IRISH' maker's mark.

Re: Irish provincial maker?

I'm puzzled as to why Jackson attributed IRH to John Irish as no other Irish silver reference book does so. Likewise, I cannot trace any source for J.R.H (JRH) being attributed to him. Bennett attributes II in an oval reserve and II in a rectangular reserve to John Irish while Dudley Westropp mentio...
