Hi, If you are enquiring of the British system, as I understand it, from 1477 to 1575 it was 18 carat, from 1575 to 1798 it was raised to 22 carat, in 1798 the 18 carat standard was reintroduced as well as the 22 carat. 1854 saw the introduction of 9, 12 and 15 carats, In 1932, 12 and 15 carats were...

I've just noticed there is another mention of him on p.306, just saying that he was last heard of in 1831. There is a good possibity of course that this is a mis-spelling of Oliver if you are going to research further,

It looks to me that the irregular outline is more likely to be damage to the punch rather than some intentional patten, presumably these punches had a life and were replaced from time to time which may account for the clean lines on the tankard.

Hi Miles, John Muns would be agood fit (Grimwades 1518) although there is a slight difference to the M he did enter a larger mark in 1757 (not shown), another possibity would be the unregistered mark of Jacob Marsh or John Moore (Grimwades 3658) as these impressions are not to clear in this section ...

Hi Julie, It will be silver, the 925 scales mark is what is called a common control mark, I believe it came into force in 1976 to enable some europeon countries to export their wares without the need for assay at the importing country. I guess the VA mark will be the makers mark, but I am sorry I ca...

I should imagine as tally marks go, this one is somewhat unusual, you would normally expect the tally mark to be next to the makers mark and be stamped pre assay, this one due to the spacing appears to be stamped post assay, presumably just a strip of silver was sent for assay, all the work being do...
