Hi Miles, The anomalies of single makers marks are often a matter of conjecture, your spoon appears to be of high quality and the closest mark that I could find was that of Thomas Heming (Grimwade 2797) the mark he lists was not taken from the register but from a dish, so one must allow for some dis...

Hi, It is a little difficult to be certain, but it would appear from your drawing that the hallmark is Sheffield 1906, so date wise it would be OK for your box, sorry I cannot help with the maker but I'm sure someone else can,

Hi , The Mcferlan mark is I feel too small, he did enter a larger mark as a plateworker but this was not until 1786. Originally the registers at Goldshiths Hall only seperated large and smallworkers, after 1773 this distinction was ended and new categories i.e. plateworkers, smallworkers, spoonmaker...

Yes, I agree with Pat, it is always difficult to differientate between the s for 1917 and the S for 1942 they are so similar in all respects as are the lion passants and anchors and outlines of these two sequences, but the mark does seem to be that of William Aitken so it looks like its 1917, regard...

Hi Miles, I suspect then, they used a variety of ingredients of whatever there was to hand. Sailors when staining their scrimshaw carvings used to use soot and oil. For the staining of whalebone (baleen) they probably used vegetable dyes, I presume they twisted them by steaming like they do with ben...

The more I think the more confused I become, I thought Kit cracked it with the brandy warmer theory, but the piece would have to be of huge proportions to enable a glass to fit under the tap, unless of course it was designed to rest on the edge of a table, also what surprises me is that it is made f...

Hi, How large is this basket? it looks as if had a handle through the centre, I suspect the two smaller holes were there so that pins on the handle would locate and prevent it unscrewing whist being carried, the marks are electo-platers marks and the 234 is probably a pattern number, if you post a s...
