Re: Help with these bright cut tongs

Hi Frank Yes they were made from one piece of silver, this pair are before the "steam days" so are probaly of a better gauge then after 1791 which is the date when the Batemans had the first steam press to flatten sheets of silver, they should wiegh about 30 to 35 grams. Tongs of this type...

Frank l would not call myself an expert, l cannot see clearly the marks you have published, although l appreciate they are rubbed my first question would be is there any signs of a duty mark, if not then this would take out the 1822 "g" the 1902 "g" is in a shield which is differ...

To be honest it is very difficult to confirm or deny looking at photos, as l said these salts are unusual, every liner l have seen has been always blue, (saying that l am talking about the cauldron shape salts) maybe some one else on here has a wider experience of liners

Hi Pauline
What an unusual and attractive pair of salts, are the feet ball and claw (Chippendale style), to me the salts are very much in the style of Adam.
Yes l agree Thomas Daniel 1778, he made several marks, from his first address 10 Carey Lane London.

Charles Chesterman ?

http://i.imagehost.org/t/0224/jug01.jpg http://b.imagehost.org/t/0510/jug02.jpg The jug is marked London !753, the maker could be Charles Chesterman, but l am not sure. Grimwades no 292.Page 202 of Jacksons are similar and the date is right at 1752, but the Cs are not as elaborate. Fallons page 77 ...

Clive Yes looking a Adcock again the mark shown in Grimwades is not his (l must wear my glasses more often) Working on the London theme another one who fits the time frame is Thomas Arnold, Grimwade shows two marks for him 2682 and 2678, the latter is still not a good match but he entered a total of...

Mike and Paul Thank you both for the reply, as said Tweedie has a pellet, the Touliet attribution (oblong mark) was registered in 1792 and there is no duty mark on these tongs, the same goes for Troby (1787). Yes Mike the Tibbet mark was from Jacksons, and as you said it does not show a pellet in th...

Sheffield Maker and Lion on a pair of cast Tongs ?

l recently got these pair of tongs but the maker and lion l cannot find, the nearest matching maker and lion l found was J Tibbits a maker in 1778, looking through other makers (London et al) this was the nearest l could find for the right time. The lion does not appear to be London and is similar t...

Clive
l think they are London made by Thomas Adcock a small worker (ent 1772)
To me they are an attractive pair of tongs and are quite early.l can see what you mean about the lion but l am sure they are right, the decoration and style all what l would expect from a pair made c1780

ls it me or is there something not right here ? the makers mark looks like John Gibson Leadbetter (Grimwades) who entered his mark in 1757 although it is not easy to see in the book The "Date Letter" N appears to be 1728 but this is far to early, on closer inspection is that a Leopards Hea...

Hi Miles as usual is spot on with his date :-) , these are a rare pair of Tongs and l believe the correct term is "Concave tongs" they are in fact made in one piece and were made c 1774-1784 (approx) the idea of the shape is to add strength to the arms, as a collector of cast tongs l know ...

The marks on the blade are silver plate marks, the silver marks are for the banding between the handles (either bone or ivory) l cannot see the silver hallmarks very well but you appear to be correct with Yates

Hi Brad
What l can tell you the piece was assayed in Birmingham in 1911/12 as for the maker the only H M l can find which would fit that period is a Henry Mathews whos mark is very similar, but l cannot be 100% sure

The date appears to be 1919 (photo not all that clear) and it was assayed in Birmingham and the maker was C Griffiths and co.
As for what the item is, l cannot seem to open the picture, is it an letter opener ? no doubt someone on this site will know
