Re: Swedish Carboot Trove!

I think I sent the inferior pictures firstly in reduced resolutions as the originals were very big files. However I soon realised that the Silver Forum wouldn't be hosting the pictures so it dawned on me to provide the better quality ones. I'm getting there! It would be great to post the actual pict...

Swedish Carboot Trove!

Hello, I bought a cheap box of silver plate cutlery (many of which are very nice) at a carboot but I have singled out seven spoons which I believe to be silver and Swedish! I wonder if anyone can help with identification of the makers of these spoons? I have done some research (which I provide below...

Re: Is This A Minerva Head?

Thankyou for the research and all you say rings true. In essence I could have a genuinely old, possible grappa cup from Naples , 1832-1872, or a similar item but from a different era with unintentionally/intentionally reproduced hallmarks. It would be great if was the latter but even if not I do lik...

Re: Is This A Minerva Head?

Thanks, thrilled to know it's early'ish Naples silver. Yes it is a very small cup with a gilt interior. The little mark to the left is like a very small crescent or lowercase J or uppercase I. Unusually there is a splodge of silver underneath the cup 'attached' to the middle of the base. I'm imagini...

Re: Is This A Minerva Head?

Oops, I did a search on here and it looks like I may have an early Italian cup! Cripes! If anyone views this post could they maybe confirm this?

Thankls again,

Greg.

Is This A Minerva Head?

Hello, This looks like a lovely French silver cup but I am unsure of the hallmarks. It has ? a Minerva head with ? a crescent shape to the left bottom and N 8 on the other side of the bust. There seems to be no French markings of this sort when I went to the online French hallmarks pages. Can anyone...

Re: Is This A Rare Spoon?

Thankyou so much for that Phil. Yes the closeness of the two W's were also confusing me. I can now ( almost immediately! ) lay my bafflements to rest. All good stuff!

http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii604/pooka39/Spoon/Adapters/WW.jpg http://i1262.photobucket.com/albums/ii604/pooka39/Spoon/Adapters/ww2.jpg Hello, Even with crisp hallmarks I'm still unable to ascertain the exact origins of this spoon. I bought it recently and it was advertised as an Edinburgh ...

Thanks Trev, I'm going to almost surely put the spoon down to Hannah Northcote.

All the best,

Re: No Town Assay Mark On Condiment Spoon

After thinking about what people have said and looking at the picture again, I do now think the “I” I mention is indeed a partly erased “H”. Looking at the maker's marks listed on here there are then three suggestions : Hannah Northcote and Napthali Hart ( as mentioned by Dognose and Silvermakersmar...

Re: No Town Assay Mark On Condiment Spoon

Many thanks for the replies! I hope the Photobucket image is appearing okay now on people's pc's - when I click my link I get a lovely, detailed big picture of the marks. Dognose do you mean, when you mention the “ three serifs ” , the three dashes on the “N”? If so then I agree that the “N” is the ...

No Town Assay Mark On Condiment Spoon

Hello, I've this nice condiment spoon but there is no town assay mark and I am finding it difficult to pin down where, when and who made it! It looks like there is an IN maker's mark, a lion guardant (?), a T date letter and a bust of George the III (?). As way of investigation I've been through all...

Re: Fancy Spoon With Deep Bowl.

Unfortunately my camera broke last night so I won't be able to post any pictures for a little while. I will endeavour to further study the three numbers before the AR and hopefully post any conclusions!

Re: Fancy Spoon With Deep Bowl.

Hi Trev,

That's great you managed to decipher what I thought was a cross-sword mark into the initials ' CMX ' - it's amazing what a trained eye can do! I'm also so pleased my spoon is silver! I'll research how to embed my pictures and post some again. Thankyou for your continuing support.

Re: Fancy Spoon With Deep Bowl.

Hi again, Just a quick corection! The number in the oval cartouche is 800. I've also waded through all 37 pages ( on here ) listing the Italian silversmiths and their regions but I can't find a silversmith in Arezzo for the number 937 or the second guesses of 987 or 337 or 387. I've tried to search ...
