Hi Trev, Thanks for your reply. Until you blew the photo up I hadn't noticed the little remains of the rest of the shape but you are definitely correct. 1712 it is! I got excited for a minute there : ) Thanks again Rhodri
HI all I have this Hanovarian Table Spoon. https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg As far as I can tell it dates 1705 (1697 ruled out from the spoons style ). If someone could confirm this date it would be appreciated. Even this seems early to me for a hanovaria...
Here is an example of a wrong size punch being used. Two spoons almost identical dimensions, one with marks the size you expect but the other has a duty mark clearly not the right size for the table spoon!
Hi all! I have this spoon dated 1721 just after the return of the Sterling Standard. https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg My question refers to the leopard head. The mark looks extremely like the leopard head seen on trefids of the pre Britannia era. Does any...
Hi all, I have this Spoon with the mark of Edward Sawyer (identified on the excellent Birmingham assay office database!) https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Does anybody have any information on Edward Sawyer? All I know is he is a spoonmaker registered with ...
Very Interesting thank you Mike its certainly the same mark and a very similar spoon. I must say unlike in Miles' Case all the marks look very clear and sharp/detailed. There is certainly no indication that the L&R is 'overstamping' anything. I may contact the BAO but a little worried what they ...
Thanks Miles and Silvermakersmarks mystery solved! Didn't think the duty mark looked right! Richard Jenkins sounds like a busy man! If anyone does have any examples of the work of Robert Jones I would still love to see them! Kind Regards, Rhodri
Hi all, I have this spoon wondering if anyone could help with the maker and any info about them? https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg It is dated 1805 - 1806 and has the usual early Birmingham (charming) crudeness. Thanks Rhodri
Hello all, I have this teaspoon https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg I have found a mark that looks very similar on two other silver sites attributed to Robert Jones of York Circa 1790. The lion passant would fit in with this but the duty mark looks later. An...
I have this interesting spoon https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Other than the middle 'PR' all the marks are very legible. The 'PR' marks don't seem to have a pellet. They are unregistered marks according to Grimwade which I suppose could go with the idea ...
Here's an Example of a teaspoon by Hampston Prince & Cattle from 1803 with the unusual case of the lion passant facing right! Bradbury suggests this occurs in 1803 & 1806, does anyone have any suggestions why this may have occurred? https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000...
Here is an invoice/receipt I have for the work of William Mason dated 1735 https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg Hope this is legible enough for all but I believe it reads: "5 & 8/9 oz of my own silver at 6s per ounce" 1:14:6 "Duty of 7 & 1/2 oz : of our own Silver at 6d"...
Hello, its an import mark (for the london assay office i believe but dont have my copy of bradburys with me) because the piece has been imported into the uk, Rhodri
Hello All, I have a teaspoon by Barber, Cattle & North that seems to have an extra mark of the letter H. https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg I thought it could be an overstrike but it looks like a separate mark. Any input would be appreciated. It is one ...
