Re: What does this "teapot" mark mean?

Hi,
P is letter code for Budapest. Ullmann could be a retailer (guessing) because I have seen Thonet furniture with his name.
I am sure teapot silversmith`s mark will be recognized.

Re: Need Help ID these interesting hallmarks - Probably made from Buda in year 1818

.750 Diana is confusing because they had the option to put .800 Diana mark for 13 loth = 812/1000. Czech bee transitional mark for ancient silver has different pentagon shape (one side is longer and convex). On the other hand, generally speaking, later marks are often arbitrary and misleading; it co...

Re: Need Help ID these interesting hallmarks - Probably made from Buda in year 1818

Hi,
It is Bratislava,Slovakia 1818 mark. (Pressburg was its German name).
Maker`s mark in the shield is unknown to me.
The rest are newer marks. E.g. Kingdom of Yugoslavia since 1933 had cockerel mark of this form, but I cannot recognize what`s inside.

Re: Nicholls & Plincke snuff box

I took this sentence very seriously as a proof of reliable provenance: The ambassador was my great-great-grandfather, with lots of family papers of his time as both a foreign minister and ambassador in Russia. Otherwise, I would be very suspicious having in mind poorly struck marks. Indeed, CE could...

This is from Skurlov blog (silversmiths and goldsmiths in St Petersburg). (With the address and referring to the same mark). ЭРНСТ Карл, 1800: ЗДМ в СПб, имел мастерскую в 1849 г., известен до 1850 — х гг. 1849: ЗДМ, Невский пр., д. Сутгофа. Постникова—Лосева: клеймо № 1522. ERNST Karl, 1800: in St....

Re: Nicholls & Plincke snuff box

Hi, There was Carl Ernst (CE), a goldsmith In St Petersburg who had a workshop 1849 and active in 1850s. The mark was listed under number 1522 in Postnikova Loseva book. Marks are really badly struck, almost beyond recognition. Association with N.Plinke and ambassador`s initials are too arbitrary an...

Hi, Silverplated, indeed. WP - diamond in crown - William Page & Co. Birmingham. B stands probably for second quality of plating, rather than for Birmingham although e.g. S was documented for Sheffield. Rd in diamond - mimicks the registered mark from Patent Office. Active from 1880 at Cranemore ...

Re: Please help with Russian 56 Mark on French Gold Pin

Hi,
It is really Amédée Datigny (A.D. with sward symbol), 18ct French eagle.
Cannot explain Russian 56, but the contour after the number looks like Moscow St.George.
I doubt 56 was added later to deceive, more likely inconsistent Russian assaying.

Re: Help to identify gold snuffbox's marks

Hi, The box is very complex; possibly both 22 and 18 carats were used and marked accordingly. If I am not mistaken there are two colors of gold. Soft 22 ct is better for casting and chasing fine details, 18ct is more durable for rolling. Or long tradition of having lion passant on gold items (since1...

Re: Danzig / Gdansk Baroque Silver Box

I think these fake marks are contemporary false marks, the owner tried to evade the taxasion. The owner faked Lemberg mark for medium sized objects in 1806 to avoid taxation (because Lemberg mark is obviously faked). Then, in 1809/1810 the owner added Freistempel N "FR" S to avoid deliver...

1. Old kits (red reaction) are still available online. 3. If the object is very small, experience is needed; 10 x loupe fixed to the eye (the way watchmakers do). Then file deep enough to expose base metal and apply small drop of acid. There will be difference between bright red if silver, (silver p...

Re: Danzig / Gdansk Baroque Silver Box

The book is: Die Danziger Goldschmiede in den Jahren 1700-1816 Jacek Kriegseisen (Danzig silversmiths in years 1700 – 1816) There was no need for harsh words; I have always been benevolent and helpful here. Unfortunately, enthusiasm and wishful thinking do not make silver 200 years older. I cannot h...
