Re: dating Birmingham Silver: The 925 inside a Balance

Hi,
The scale is common control mark;since 1972 the UK has been a signatory to the international convention on hallmarks, meaning UK Assay Offices can apply the common control mark.
Your inkwell was made in 1992 by M Kamin & Co Ltd.

Re: 84 hallmark WARSAW

Either AB or AP, this mark undoubtedly places A.Riedel in Warsaw. There was much confusion even with reputable auction houses, placing him in Minsk and even St Petersburg.

Re: oil lamp, hall/trade mark? stamped "porto"

Hi, There seems to be no controversy here;Kosmos burner was developed (invented) by Wild & Wessel of Berlin in 1865 (wick "Goes in flat, comes out round").Exported and patented worldwide,Portugal included. Local manufacturer in Porto built in German burner and added his stamp. It seems ...

Re: unusal spoon,Maybe dutch ,looks like English marks?

I see what you mean;many spoons of this kind look like this, although the angle is too sharp;I think it is a bit accidently bent a bit too much. Can be straightened a little, but be careful.

Hi, Looks authentic Finnish born silversmith Дальман Александр Карлович. On the other hand,I do not buy Russian silver any more;it is overpriced and too many fakes.Besides, cloisonne is not very complicated enameling technique and huge quantities of ecclesiastical items with cloisonne on base metals ...

Re: Bird applique

The tale of raven with golden ring dates back to 15th century town Merseburg in Saxony. Bishop Thilo von Trotha, who ruled in Merseburg in the 15th century, had his faithful servant executed because he was suspected of having stolen a valuable ring from his master. After a long time, the ring was di...

Re: Bird applique

Hi, Tremolierstich can reasonably narrow the search to German speaking countries. Raven holding a ring in the beak (Rabe im Schnabel einen Ring haltend) is found mostly in Austria - Hungary lower nobility with Croatian family name. Similar heraldic raven with the ring is depicted in Polish nobility ...

Re: Vesta case

Hertfordshire Wheelers cycling club have been established in the East Herts area since July 1928,rather late for vesta safes.
Possibly enameled at later date (cannot decipher date letter; must be cursive.... a or g ....anyway before 1910).

The stone could be Seraphinite, rather rare mineral from Eastern Siberia (across the Ural mountain close to Sverdlovsk region).

Re: Beautiful cup-18th century

The very size of the foot base may be debatable but there are clear signs of foot repair (red arrow) and maker's mark is cut almost in half because the base was soldered over it.There is no way to apply a punching tool on uneven rim of the base unless the original base was removed and the new base s...
