Re: Help with identification

Hi,
Those are pewter marks. It is rather easy to distinguish pewter from silver (and silverplate) because pewter is much softer metal.

The maker is what Amena said, meaning he is right; the mark appears with various retailers, though.

Re: Mystery Mark (German? English?)

Hi,
It is not sterling fineness if you have in mind sterling (.925) as a synonym for solid silver.
German standards at the time were mostly 12 Loth .750 and 13 Loth .812,5

Re: A couple of question Hanau pieces

Hi,
Moisture in the air can react with the copper present in silver alloy, causing a green discoloration, particularly in salt cellars.
I think both pieces are solid silver, possibly of lower fineness in the first example, e.g. 750.
Attribution looks OK.

Re: Newbie Needs Help With Hallmark -- Please

Appart from lion passant, duty mark only vagualy resembles early 19th century British monarchs. What was intented to be date letter does not match the form of major British offices at the time (the closest is Chester 1802). All said,it is most likely overseas. Regretfully, we seldom find full inform...

Re: Newbie Needs Help With Hallmark -- Please

Hi,
Marks are on broken knife blade.
They look like British pseudo marks, but I may be wrong.
There is no town mark and the maker`s mark of this form is unknown to me.

Re: Is this Austrian silver?

HI, Austria-Hungary dog`s head mark for 800 silver (small items). They used dog`s head on sugar castors, although Diana`s head would be more appropriate for an object of this size. For Italian marks see here: https://www.925-1000.com/Fitalian_marks_01.html Either way, there is no problem with the mar...

Re: Augsburg dish.

Hopeless; now auction house is wrong! Austrian Repunze tax exemption seen here is well documented Neresheimer mark. Before going deeper into the subject, tell us what`s the town letter N used in 1809. As far as I am concerned, the issue ends here; just another example of wishful thinking regarding H...

Re: Augsburg dish.

Not a maker, bottom image shows again notstempel-frei mark (upside down) used by Neresheimer, as well as pseudo Augsburg. There is a gap in town assay offices code letters: M was for Munkács, but there is no N town mark. V was for Venezia/Venedig (1805-1810). Letter N appears later as N1 for Split/S...

The freistempel was used in 1809/10 for objects exempted to be delivered to the redempion offices. It is well documented Neresheimer pseudo mark; always with letter N to the let. Another example of Neresheimer set of marks bellow;``freistempel`` far left (letter N again !),with partially struck pseu...
