Re: 16th or 17h English silver

Hi,
An image of the item might shed more light, but as Peter suspected,it is most likely Hanau, second half 19th century.

Re: Silver chain 19th (?) from Europe.

There is something else I noticed on Austria-Hungary chains of the same period, both on gold and silver. Several links were marked, not randomly, but I could not figure out the system behind it.Must be something like French system of multiple marks on chains and clasps, depending on length,i.e.weight ...

Re: Austrian sugar bowl

Hi,
The country is not Austria but Austria - Hungary Empire. There is a capital letter in front of Diana`s head indicating the town (assay office).Try to identify it to narrow the search.

Re: Italian maker mark Moroui ?

Hi,
I think bas relief on silver by Moroni is being made by MIDA argenti located in Recanati,Macerata province, founded 1974.
At least some of his works I have seen were made by MIDA;cannot tell if the artist opened his own studio and was registered as silversmith.

Re: Russian Silver Server Mark Identity

3-4 cm is too big for kokoshnik, but on the other hand allows perfect close up of the mark to see details.
Can you do it,please ?

Re: Russian Silver Server Mark Identity

Hi,
Qrt.S is right about the kokoshnik being suspicious;is it female head at all ? Besides, numeral 8 is much bigger than numeral 4.
Sharp image of real kokoshnik is given by Qrt.S to compare with.It is very precise and detailed mark.

Re: Gold Ring - 2 diamonds - 1 sapphire - [3 Hallmarks to identify]

Of course,it is valid if the ring was moved to another town and marked there. Remarking is common and done for many reasons, not only for official export or import, sometimes owners wanted their silver and gold remarked by local assay office for whatever reason. In a word,I think this is all we can t...

Re: Gold Ring - 2 diamonds - 1 sapphire - [3 Hallmarks to identify]

Cannot explain the upper mark which is partially struck.
The mark with fox head bearing P indicates the ring was made i Budapest, Hungary. The other mark was possibly added later.

Re: Help with identifying London Sterling Silver Gilt Brooch - Maker?

The only way to identify the maker is to contact London Assay Office where he was registered:
The Goldsmiths’ Company Assay Office
Goldsmiths’ Hall
Gutter Lane
London

Re: Gold Ring - 2 diamonds - 1 sapphire - [3 Hallmarks to identify]

Then it is Budapest (Hungary).
P is short for Pest because there were two towns in the past, i.e. Buda and Pest,The Danube river between them, then they united to become Budapest.Traditionally, letter P was assigned to them.

Re: Hallmarked London Silver Gilt Brooch - Maker?

Hi,
This is the best I could do with your maker`s mark.
Unfortunately, VN has not been identified so far.
Date letter s should be for 1992.
I am sure London Assay Office can help in identifying the maker.

Re: Gold Ring - 2 diamonds - 1 sapphire - [3 Hallmarks to identify]

Dog`s head mark for silver was different.
Prague was in Austria-Hungary Empire at the time and its assay office was assigned town number C (not date letter).
A was for Vienna, B for Budapest.

Re: Help ID Maker of Sterling Marked Basket

Hanau silversmiths were known exporters to Britain. When they met .925 sterling standard silver was properly marked with sponsor`s mark and British import marks (depending on assay office).Sterling word was rarely seen, though, but it did exist. In this particular case, close inspection with 10X loupe c...
