Re: Unknown hallmark

Thanks Ag2012 for your considerations. I am convinced that the two cups could be of Sicilian manufacture and that the fantasy mark intends to remember the Sicilian hallmark at the time of the reign of the two Sicilies. Probably artifacts from the early 1900s https://i.postimg.cc/DWnWQYbr/MARCHIO-SCO...

A cruet

Hello everybody a friend of mine asked me to identify the marks of this cruet. Unfortunately, I have no clues to give him an answer. Maybe any of you recognize one of the marks? https://i.postimg.cc/vcczRDT1/cruet-1.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/YGCF1ym4/cruet-2.jpg Thanks a lot Amena

Re: Unknown hallmark

Well
85 people have already read this post , including, I must assume, experts in all kinds of European silver.
If no one has identified a hallmark, or a silversmith's mark, it is reasonable to assume that the photo I posted is most likely a pseudo mark, and this is a good result.
Thank you all.

Unknown hallmark

Dear friends I saw this nautilus cup on online auction. https://i.postimg.cc/RNScZmFT/MARCHIO-SCONOSCIUTO-2.jpg It is described as 19th century Italian, but the mark shown, as far as I know, is not an Italian mark. https://i.postimg.cc/w1tR1jdD/MARCHIO-SCONOSCIUTO.jpg Does anyone recognize this hall...

Re: Why ladles are so often broken ?

Hi The causes that you list are all acceptable. In addition it is known that in the corners there is a concentration of tensions which favors the initiation of cracks. It remains difficult for me to think that a correct use of the ladle and even repeated cleaning can lead to the breakages that I fin...

Re: Why ladles are so often broken ?

Hi
Accidental falls may well justify dents and scratches, but these cracks look like fatigue failure.
I mean, not due to an occasional impact, but to repeated stresses. It seems to me that we must think of a continued use other than collecting a soup. Maybe crush or hit something.Who knows.

Why ladles are so often broken ?

Hi to all of you I noticed that many ladles are cracked at the attachment of the handle to the cup. https://i.postimg.cc/fJSnX4BV/ladle.jpg The frequency of these breaks amazes me, since the weight of the liquid contained in the cup is not that great. Perhaps these ladles were used in some other way...

Re: Please teach me a little lesson

Hi JayT Thanks for your comments. Unfortunately I don't have any more photos of the marks since I don't have the item, I just saw it on the Internet. Your observation is correct, it is a coffee pot because the lid is closed, you can see it well in this photo. https://i.postimg.cc/5Qpcvt04/cioccolati...

Please teach me a little lesson

Hello everyone, and especially those who know about French silver. It is a rather complicated subject and I have already given up on becoming an expert, but I would like to learn at least the basic things. I saw this chocolate pot on the Internet, described as being from the mid-18th century, re- ha...

Re: Please help me identify silversmith of the cruet

The AS mark mimics the one of Anzolo Scarabello, but is clearly a fantasy mark.

Re: A teaspoon from Romania

Hi AG2012 your consideration is very interesting. I did not think about it At first I thought of a silversmith identification system as used in Rome in the 19th century. A lozenge containing the master's initials and a number that identified the shop. But the number 12 would be a really odd coincide...

The crowned B is the trademark of Porciani srl.
It made silvered objects of great quality (and price). I believe it is closed now.

Re: Chicago World's Fair 1893 Souvenir Spoon - Sterling?

I believe that focusing attention on air bubbles is not the right way. Suppose a teaspoon of sterling silver weighs 20 grams. It will have a volume of 20: 10.373 = 1.92808 cm3 i.e. 1928.08 mm3. If we consider an air bubble, adhering to the spoon, of 2 mm in diameter, which cannot escape observation,...

Hi Theo I have no Informations that church silver being counterfeited, but I am learning. Well, you can also find church silver items with fancy hallmarks. For example in this cross https://www.beweb.chiesacattolica.it/benistorici/bene/3155492/Bottega+napoletana+%281710%29%2C+Croce+astile# you can s...

This type of finish, with circular buffing tool, is very usual in Italian silver. It is done by the manufacturer.
