Re: Packfong

So my doubts are confirmed, if the base metal is white, which involves the presence of nickel, then the artifact cannot be prior to around 1830. Even the silvering suggests an object from the mid-19th century. The bucket is also silvered inside and this seems to rule out the mercury silvering proces...

Packfong

Hello everyone I recently found a silver metal holy water bucket. Obviously it has no hallmark and therefore it is difficult to date it. The shape is typical of the eighteenth century, and is certainly handcrafted, but it could have been made even later. One thing that makes me think it is later tha...

Re: Italian Silver

I'm sorry but I have no news other than those I have already published. Evidently, since the box was donated in 1871, John Sutton worked as a plant manager in previous years, but I don't know how many. It appears that some machinery was purchased by the Fairbairn firm of Leeds in the early 1850s, an...

Re: Is this Silver and is it from uk? :)

I've seen this kind of marks on a siver plate tray.
Can you post the photo of the whole object?
Can you take a test to see if it's silver or not?

Re: Silver item 17-18th century

Although these containers are usually made of pewter, the color makes me think it is bronze or brass.
I could be wrong, of course.

Hanau ?

A friend asked me for help identifying this hallmarking. https://i.postimg.cc/PNZpSzLD/teiera-bem.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/8jSF9JW0/teiera-bemi.jpg In my opinion these are Hanau marks since I found some very similar ones in the dedicated section that are attributed to different silversmiths. Other m...

Re: Need help with unknow hallmarks

I was expecting someone to answer this interesting question and I am a little surprised that after a week no one has answered.
A doubt arises: is it really certain that it is solid silver?

It's been a long time and in the meantime the photos have disappeared, but today I have some news. First of all, here is again the photo of the coffee pot with its marks. https://i.postimg.cc/RWz92fXT/CAFFETTIERA.jpg Today I had photos of a serving platter and a cloche bought together in Italy. http...

Re: Maltese silver casting bottle/flask

I add another sentence from the book The silver of Malta which could shed some light on the subject A fluted pear-shaped coffee pot (lot 166) on three hoof feet of typical Roman design of the mid 18th century is struck with an intriguing assaymark in addition to the Pinto period six-pellet mint mark...

Re: Maltese silver casting bottle/flask

Alaine Apap Bologna's book does not have many photos of marks, it is rather a review of an exhibition of Matese silver. I have put here below the marks of "MA surmounted by a Maltese cross" that can be found in this book. The one that is most similar is the one circled in red. However, it ...

Re: Italian cornucopia & bag

Neither silverplate nor solid silver.
They are resin objects covered with a thin layer of silver. For this they have the R in a square. More focused and embedded photos can lead to other information

Photographs of marks

It happens sometimes, while surfing the internet, to come across good quality photographs of marks. If someone wanted to point me to the link to...

Re: What I did not understand?

Here is the mystery ( for me) solved.
Thanks, Peter, for the clear and thorough explanation.
The battle was so heated that there had to be a valid reason to justify it.
Best regards

What I did not understand?

Today I attended an auction in which this box was sold. https://i.postimg.cc/9rCmQzwk/scatola-02-copia.jpg It was so described Circular seal-holder box in cast and chiseled silver. Netherlands (?) 18th-19th century gr. 465, height 3.1 cm, diameter 15.1 cm. I know it's not allowed to talk about price...

Re: Unknown hallmark

I don't think you can assume the fineness of an alloy from a fantasy mark that has no official value. I think whoever affixed it may have used any mixture, even less than 800/000.
I've found a silver tray bearing a Milanese/Venetian mimicking mark made of an alloy of less than 700/000.
