Re: Strange English hallmark on a spoon

On the Internet, regarding the "magnetic test of silver", you can find a bit of everything. one of the sites https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Es3JXLZL2g shows how a silver coin moves, if a powerful magnet is waved over it. It is very true, you can try it, but you also can move a copper coi...

Re: Strange English hallmark on a spoon

I am very worried. Assuming that teaspoon was actually tested with an XRF machine and the result was actually that the teaspoon is made of a 98% silver alloy, what confidence can we have in those machines and who is operating them?

Re: Container of what?

Thanks everyone for the help. I doubted that such a small object could be used for gunpowder. Instead I verified that what Ag 2012 claims is correct. I filled the container completely with powder and was able to fill the pan of a flintlok more than 20 times. Enough for a hunting trip. https://i.post...

"roughly cast" is a polite understatement.
First of all, are you sure it's silver?

Container of what?

Hello everyone I hope not to commit a mortal sin by posting this question concerning a mysterious container, which however is not made of silver, but of iron. It is very small in size and opens by pressing the lever where indicated by the red arrow. https://i.postimg.cc/bDkhK7wr/DSCF8551.jpg It may ...

Re: Are these French marks on Vernis Martin style box?

I am not particularly interested in gold objects, but I must say that until now I have never seen an object with the Lombardo-Veneteo marks prescribed for gold. I have an image, not of excellent quality, of the drawings https://i.postimg.cc/KKSK9ZHV/zargentotto-015n-copia-3.jpg As for the Milan plow...

Re: Spanish chalice

Hi Ag 2012
"Old threading tools are easy to find (they do differ in number of threads per 1 cm, but I had no problem to find them)."
Thanks for information. I have learned something very useful. I thought old tools were now impossible to find. I'll be even more careful.
Best regards

Re: Spanish chalice

What Ag2012 says is true, on the other hand the presence of a screw is also a good clue to establish the age of an object. An ancient screw is very different from a modern one. https://i.postimg.cc/nsRFkVWC/vite-calice-spagna-copia.jpg I consulted a Spanish friend, an expert in silver. In his opinio...

Spanish chalice

Dear friends I have seen this chalice that I really like, but before I think about it seriously, I would like to be sure that it is a genuine 18th century Oviedo chalice. In the "Enciclopedia de la plata espanola y virreinal americana", under Oviedo I find a very similar, but not identical...

Re: Flower mark on a silver trail

Hello Ag 2012 I must add a note to what you said There are test liquids at different concentrations and with different acids. In Italy, the one you find in specialized shops is calibrated for the fineness 800, which is the most used, and is sulfuric acid based. This liquid gives a red reaction on 80...

Re: Flower mark on a silver trail

About the touchstone test, a well-known online auction site has published the following: aImpressive and impeccable reliquary, in silver with sealed relic inside. Silver hallmarks , https://i.postimg.cc/1ncDKsNH/fini-x-1.jpg https://i.postimg.cc/p5WzG4ft/fini-x-2.jpg authentic collector's item, posi...

Re: A question about Italian silver hallmarks

I found some other clues on the Internet about it. The beginnings ( of the Sambonet factory) date back to the end of the 1700s, when Giuseppe Sambonet, a nobleman from Vercelli, skilled goldsmith and silversmith, was entrusted with the restoration of precious sacred objects kept in the cathedral of ...

I suppose it is the trademark, with the initials of Gianguido Sambonet, but I have no proof of that.

Re: Fratelli Cacchione ivory top box, what age?

900 0 800 is NOT a "small point" at all. The fineness 900 was used in the early years of the twentieth century, but not after 1935. The law provided for only 2 finenesses: 800/000 and 925/000. To me it seems to see 800 inside the oval but I could be wrong. I have seen several snuff boxes w...

Re: Fratelli Cacchione ivory top box, what age?

Well, there are rules and there are exceptions. The law of February 5, 1934 says so Any object containing platinum, gold and silver cannot be offered for sale to the public if it does not bear the manufacturer's mark applied with the punch delivered by the assay office to the person concerned, and f...
