Hi Louise, This tastevin is French silverplate. French silver maker's marks are (from c.1810 onward) framed in a diamond shaped cartouche and would, of course, be accompanied by recognizable silver standard & guarantee marks. French silverplater's trademarks are framed within a rectangle and are...

Hi,
The mark may well go back that far, but I don't think the use of a screen mesh basket does. I really don't recall seeing them before the 1960's. 'Course that's just my opinion, so let's see what others have to say.

Hi, Your piece is of recent vintage, WMF is still in business and producing items similar to yours and using the trademark illustrated. I'd suspect your item is stainless steel rather than silverplate. Regards, Tom http://www.wmf.de/suche.asp?nv_id=616&se_id=519&sp_id=1&sid=8637964129447...

Hi,
Yes, definitely Italian, the star was not added to the state mark until sometime in the 60's or so. Hopefully someone can confirm with an exact date.

Hi Louise,
I believe the Bird head is a Portuguese mark from the city of Oporto. Tardy only illustrates it for .833 silver, so the .925 standard in use on your piece probably indicates that it is of recent vintage.

Hi,
Your salts are from Peru and each was raised from a Peruvian silver coin. The coat of arms at the center of the coin was left alone as the outer edge was forged into the walls of the bowl.

Do a little research here and you'll be able to answer most of your own questions ->
British Hallmarks
You won't be able to identify the maker there, but perhaps someone here will field that one for you.

After 1892 or so, the US required goods of foreign make to be marked with the country of origin. The Crichton Brothers had an upscale retail showroom in New York, I think on Fifth Ave., for which they imported their own goods.

ps. it is Britannia standard

Hello Kevin, This site documents something like 7,500 marks at present, however there is no section on British maker's marks, nor is there likely to be for a very long time. The scope of such a project is somewhat daunting. Your best bets for web info on British makers can be found on this links pag...

It may be the size of Jen's images, they are each 27 inches wide, when that large, they take 5 minutes apiece to load on a page with a dial up connection. I'm guessing that computers without a ton of ram may just refuse to even try to access them. I've copied a couple and have reduced them to more u...
