Nice to see it again, I owned the same DeMatteo sculpture a few years ago. The presentee's name was different on mine, I imagine that AT&T commissioned a number of these for presentation.

Hi, Even working with good images these marks are easily confused. Yours is the Austro-Hungarian lion head mark used on small articles, the number and letter within the mark will give you more information. http://www.925-1000.com/Faustria_02.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Regard...

Hi, Actually, it is the mark of Gerardus Schoorl of Zaandijk, a suburb of Amsterdam. Although his son Cornelis was probably in charge of the business by this time. Looks to be a thriving concern, he owned retail outlets in both Amsterdam and Den Haag (the hague). Below is an advertisement from a 190...

Hi Trev, Thanks, only knew of Wise in the vaguest sense as a California smith. Here is Blanchard's wikipedia entry in which Wise features: Porter Blanchard (1886 — 1973) was a famous silversmith living and working in Pacoima, California in the United States. He is considered to be part of the Arts a...

The finish work on your piece may be superior to the other example, but the work is still far cruder that one would hope for in an antique piece. All of the examples seen are one piece cast construction, this is not how an early spoon would have been made. Please have a look on the front, just above...

Hi, In the Netherlands they used pseudo-marks, combinations of pseudo-marks and genuine hallmarks, and sometimes, no marks at all. It is far more likely your piece is also a copy, identical as it is to the other it is likely to have been made in the same mold. Also, were it an early piece it would s...

Porter Blanchard

Allan Adler, the late California modernist silversmith, is quoted as stating that, beginning in 1938, he'd learned to work silver from his father-in-law, the Arts & Crafts silversmith Porter Blanchard. I'd always suspected this apprenticeship was Blanchard's way of looking out for his daughter B...
