S.B. matchsafe?

I just unearthed this, though I've had it for a long time. The picture of the stamp isn't great, but is clearly S.B. Does anyone know who this might be? Also, there seem to be a lot of silver matchsafes on the auction sites - like a LOT of them. Many by Gorham? Were there this many made that have su...

Fire Company presentation silver

I've become interested in silver produced as presentation pieces for fire companies. While doing some searching I came across a "A Complete History of the Boston Fire Department" from 1889 which is available online. http://archive.org/stream/completehistoryo00bray/completehistoryo00bray_dj...

Re: Roger Williams Silver Co - here's a tough one

Whoops! OK, that's embarassing. I just got a copy of the Rainwater book, and was happy when I found the mark in the book after not finding it in the marks here. Unfortunately I didn't notice that the marks in the book were after the description and not before . So, clearly I have the wrong manufactu...

Re: Belt buckle? Jewelry?

Yes, that makes it very clear. Thank you! I wonder if they would have marked only one half, in which case this still might be worth testing to see if silver or plate In any case, I hope someone has the other half. Maybe this post will get updated in ten years when it shows up ...

Roger Williams Silver Co - here's a tough one

The sleuths here are obviously too good. Hopefully this will be more of a challenge. Two spoons in the same pattern, one is marked by Roger Williams Silver Co (Note to admin - this is a better mark than you have online, so feel free to steal this). No sterling mark, so it probably isn't silver, thou...

Thank you for the replies. Chatelaine - there's a new word for me! I'm guessing this would be Victorian era? Too bad if it's only half there.

Reed & Barton unknown pattern

I can't find this pattern. Looks to be an old one - does anyone recognize it? Re: Belt buckle? Jewelry?

Thanks very much for your reply. Here's a picture of the back. I don't see anything broken off. There's a hook in the lower right of the first picture, but I can't think of anything that would need a hook and loop at the top, and a hook on one side. http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad132/4more/Sil...

Cyprus Greece bowl?

I have an 830 silver bowl that appears to be from Cyprus, thanks to the helpful link posted in this tread http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=23737 . Can anybody help with a date or maker? Could it be the mark for Kalopedis? It is very similar to bowls that are currently being sold...

Belt buckle? Jewelry?

There are no touchmarks on this, so I assume it is silver-plate. But what explains the strange mix of fancy finished design with crude hooks and loop at the top and side? Does anyone know what this could have been used for? http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad132/4more/Silver/P9030400.jpg

Re: When is it OK for Assayer mark to be missing?

Ouch, my head hurts! This is clearly a very complex subject, with lots of variations and exceptions. Thank you both for your very informative replies. Before reading the posts on this forum I knew exactly nothing about Russian hallmarking. Now I know as much as I have learned from the hallmark pages...

Re: When is it OK for Assayer mark to be missing?

Thank you for your answer. I'm in the US and have collected a fair amount of silve, but I hardly ever see any Russian silver. I do not currently own any Russian silver books, and my local library did not have any. But now I've gone against my better judgement and entered this den of iniquity known a...

When is it OK for Assayer mark to be missing?

I am trying to learn by reading posts, and have noticed that authentic russian silver sometimes has an assayer mark, but not always. For example in gena's spoon threads, here is one with an assayer mark ( http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=29698 ), and here is one with no assayer...

Re: Taxco - Taller?

Thanks, I saw the mark for Taller Borda, but this isn't it. As far as I can tell, it is just a stylized Taller with a mark I can't make out. I was hoping someone might recognize the Taller font used or know what the mark was.

Re: brass tray

Sorry I can't help with yours. But if you can post a brass tray with only a small portion of silver, does that mean that I can post one with no silver? I have a few of these in different styles, but this is my favorite: http://i929.photobucket.com/albums/ad132/4more/Asia/P4180065.jpg" onclick="windo...

Re: Taxco - Taller?

I've poked around on the internet and found that Taller is spanish for Workshop. There were several mexican Taller stamps - e.g. Taller Borda, Taller Cabrera. So its kind of strange that the mark on mine is just a stylized Taller without saying which workshop. More digging needed...

Re: Taxco - Emma?

Sorry, I had missed the link for the "Mexican Marks Main Pages".

Looks like this is Emma Melendez's shop (and possibly design?) with Francisco Rivera's work from 1953-1955. Any other info would be great.

Help with a pocketwatch case?

I have a pocketwatch that I finally figured out how to open. I expected to find a makers mark on the movement, but was disappointed to find nothing. The only marks are on the silver case. The serial number on the movement and case match so it is original. I'm hoping someone can help with the marks o...
