Re: "OAG" trademark

Hello, this is OAG for Orivit AG (shareholding company) from Cologne, Germany. Suspect the C is for Cologne, The number is an internal pattern number. As to the H - another suspicion: this piece was made by using the Huber process, a production method aquired and applied by Orivit for a few years. S...

Re: Interesting Spoon, Possibly German

Hello, the fact that the name of Radivon can be found on WMF objects should not be overestimated. In no way does it imply that Radivon was the actual maker. The WMF gave much of their stuff to foreign salers as in most countries the WMF did not bother to set up its own factories or its own distribut...

Re: Small Spoon Gold Colored - Coin?

Hello, this is indeed neither silver nor silverplate, it is "German Silver" with a high content of copper, thus the yellowish tint. Cheryl is on spot (as always) - maker is Juerst and Co from Berlin. This can be very roughly dated around 1860-1870, give or take, the 13 was meant to fool pe...

Re: Soup Tureen (Possibly 12 Loth)

Hello, this is Hermann Bückmann (Bueckmann) from Hannover, jeweller, goldsmith and silversmith. He became a master and a citizen there in 1841. Date of death unknown. The absence of a city marks leads me to believe that this can be dated around 1860/1870, give or take. Agree that 12 most likely stan...

Hello, Hansa is one of the marks used by Koch and Bergfeld on its plated flatware. The key is the old city mark of Bremen, where the company is still active. Regards, Bahner

Re: Belgium Hall Mark - A.800

Hello and oh yes, there is plating on objects made from silver 800 or even 925 fine. The company of Robbe and Berking e.g., one of the last remaining German makers of silver flatware does it on all of its sterling silver flatware. Sounds strange but there is a reason, actually two reasons: the resul...

Hello, due to recent changes in European regulations on the online use of personal data the site of Theo is no longer accessible. You may want to send him a personal message via this page. There are several publications on Munich silversmiths, all in oldfashioned printed form. The most recent ist th...

Re: Koch & Bergfeld - Silverplate or Solid Silver?

Hello, the key is the old Bremen city mark and was in use until the end of the 1880ies. It represents a fineness of 12 Lot (750/1000 fine). So I think this is silver made before the new German hallmarking laws became effective as of January 1st, 1888. Regards, Bahner

Re: Catalogue Image Restrictions

Hello, don't know about the US, but in Germany the situation is much more complex. Quoting a text is mostly no problem. Even if one quotes a commercial slogan which has a copyright on it the owner of the copyright usually considers this a form af free advertising and is not opposed to this. He may a...

Hello, Memmert is VERY unlikely. The M appears in combination with so many different maker*s marks (among them major players like Bruckmann) that is could not possibly stand for a minor maker like Memmert. It is now believed that the M stands for "millesime" to make clear that the numeral ...

Re: Christofle plated fork without full marks

Hello, one of the reasons might be that this was made for a retailer/seller who wanted to claim this as his own product and would not want the mark of the actual maker to be on the pieces. In Germany this was quite a common practice and to my knowledge it was also done in other countries. Regards, B...
