Best Sterling Pattern Identification Book

Way too often I find an American sterling pattern I can't identify and spend hours trying to identify it. Opinions on the best pattern identification book available? Thanks.

Re: Unidentified Stieff Pattern

Never mind the pattern - it's Corsage.

That does bring up a question though. replacements lists the pattern as active from 1935 - 1991.

Is the "B" on some of my pieces "Pat. B" a patent 1937 date?

Thank you. I'll check it out. I was thinking East Coast but San Francisco bay is kind of craggy as I remember.

Re: knife blades

Stainless steel has been around since the early 19th century but those alloys were very expensive, brittle and prone to corrosion (seen even today when a stainless blade gets black pits under certain conditions). Two men, a Brit named Harry Brearley and American Elwood Hayes, were working on the pro...

Silver Crumb Tray with no marks

Everyone helped me out with my last question and I'm now the owner of a Ohaus Cent-O-Gram going crazy weighing pieces to determine the composition. I found an "antique sterling silver" crumb tray at an estate auction I attend and bought it. The problem is that it has no hallmarks or silver...

Re: Towle Old Colonial - Plate or Sterling?

Well, other than my scale wanting to float it seems like it might have worked. Put the scale in the bag and weighted it in and out of the water setting the tare since the bag has some weight & it's different in and out of water. Out of water - 64.4 grams In water - 58 grams Am I correct that 64....

Re: Towle Old Colonial - Plate or Sterling?

Hmmmm - pondering the specific gravity test, do you see any problem with sealing my scale in a ZIP-LOCK bag (other than the bag leaking) and performing the test?

Re: Towle Old Colonial - Plate or Sterling?

Thank you. I actually seem to recall doing something like this in a chemistry course 40 years ago :-)

Of course, my jewelers scale is battery so it look like i need to to find a balance beam type.

Thanks again

Re: Towle Old Colonial - Plate or Sterling?

P.S. I've searched a bit and eBay does have a number of "Sterling" Old Colonial preserve spoons listed. None of the listing give a weight & some describe the spoons as having the old marks "Pat. 1895, Towle Hallmark & Sterling (or 925/100)" I've tried to narrow it down by...
