Re: Captain's spoon from Riga

I had mentioned earlier that I would provide more information on the two spoons shown by Goldstein. First, as an item of information, this Forum has a chapter on Captain's Spoons, opened by our friend Hose_dk in 2009 with numerous contributors and examples of captain's spoons from various cities on ...

Re: Captain spoons

On 28 September 2017 Goldstein presented in an entry in the chapter on Russian Silver a Captain's Spoon from Riga from the merchant house Hill Gebrüder and in a second entry another spoon from J. Fenger & Co. The entries are at http://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=46&t=48787 I had i...

Re: Captain's spoon from Riga

First of all, congratulations! They are both very fine Captain's Spoons, in particular the one with the view of Riga. Unfortunately I am away from home and my references until next week but I intend to post a little more information re. the spoon from Hill Gebr. and the various examples of spoons fr...

Re: Spoon from Riga

In Mrs. Valda Vilite book on Latvian silversmiths "Latvijas Sudrabkali - Darbi un Meistaru Zimes", "Goldschmiede Lettlands - Verzeichnis der Merkzeichen und Werke", Riga Avots 1993, there is at the end of the section for Riga on pp. 98-100 the list "Meistari, kas 1882.-1903 ...

Re: Silver spoon. Kingdom of Prussia tax mark(?).

Interesting... You are correct. For the combination of letters JFD or jfd I also got no returns. This is strange because I have used the search engine of the site many times with only some letters and/or initials and have been successful. If you can find the country and then the town it is then very...

Re: Silver spoon. Kingdom of Prussia tax mark(?).

Certainly, here it is http://silberpunze.freehost.ag/ It is in german. It is a collection of real town and maker's mark from real objects. There is a Search box, in which you have to write a name or letters for a silversmith or a city/town and then press the button Abschicken (= Send). The site then...

Re: Silver spoon. Kingdom of Prussia tax mark(?).

Your spoon was made by Johann Friedrich Dumrath, silversmth in Stralsund and son of Martin Dumrath, also silversmith in Stralsund. The spoon shows the city mark of Stralsund and the maker's mark JFD in cursive letters. Ref.: Wolfgang Scheffler, Goldschmiede Mittel- und Nordostdeutschlands , Walter d...

Help for maker of spoon, please

I recently bought this Moscow tea spoon. I have looked at the information on this site and I have P-L. I have found the assay master, Anatoly Artsybashev, and I think that the maker, P.A (R.A latin), is Roman Aristarkhov, if P-L- is correct. Any additional information is very welcome. https://www.92...

Re: Beaker - Silver or Silver Plate?

And I overlooked something... I went back and looked through the dozens of photographs I have of the pages of von Czihak's book and on page 89 I found the following: https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg (Translation: Named in 1836 as goldsmith (1 Damm 1115), entered the profession in 1838 and live...

Re: Beaker - Silver or Silver Plate?

Following AG2012 answer, I attach the complete entry for (Carl) Moritz Stumpf, Ältermann in Danzig 1840, 1845, 1850, 1851 as AG2012 indicated. The entry is on page 46 of the 1908 edition of v. Czihak's book, vol. 2. The Victoria and Albert Museum library has a copy of the book and a couple of years ...

Re: Captain spoons

Your spoon is indeed a Captain's Spoon. As you indicate, it was given by the commercial house of Jacob Jacke in Pernau in 1867. Pernau was then in the province of Livonia (Livland) in the Russian Empire. It is now know as Pärnu and is in Estonia. The pattern is typical for the spoons from Pernau fro...

Re: Captain spoons

Nice spoon, Hose. The commercial House Fenger & Co. was founded in the mid-1700 by Johann Joachim Fenger, originally from Wismar in Germany, as J. J. Fenge r. On his death in 1785 the firm became Fenger & Co. and later J. J. Fenger Wittwe & J. G. Böttcher until the son of the founder too...

St. Petersburg spoon

Could please someone identify the maker of this 1876 St. Petersburg engraved spoon? I have only P-L as reference and it indicates the assay master PK as unknown. It has no entry for the maker EE in cyrillic. For EE in latin it has two entries, Erik Enqvist and Elias Enckenberg, both too early, and t...

Re: Captain spoons

Another interesting entry from Hose! The spoon was made in 1785 by Johann Gottlieb Hantel in Königsberg (initials IGH, Scheffler no. 287, von Czihak no. 287), born in 1737, active from approx. 1769 until his death in 1790. He became a burgess of Königsberg in 1775. The date letter small-y is for 1...
