Re: Need help Identifying French Silversmith Mark

It would help if you could let us know what kind of object this mark is found on and what the other marks are.

Re: the basilisk on french sugar-bowl ?

Your silver sugar bowl was made by Eugène Lefebvre working at 14 bis, rue de Minimes in Paris. The mark is initials EL on a horizontal axis on either side of a swan pierced with an arrow. Lefebvre entered his mark on 9 March 1896; it was erased on 11 June 1910. Hope this helps to identify the maker...

Re: Silver Cup Hallmark

You are welcome.

Your cup was made before U.S. makers adopted the sterling silver standard. It is made of coin silver.

Re: Silver Cup Hallmark

This appears to be the mark of the American firm William Gale & Son, active 1853-1866. Nice find.

Re: Flatware Items

Interesting question. Here is my input: because your maker is Towle, I assume you want a flatware service for use in the U.S. A basic flatware service in the U.S. consists of 4 pieces (dinner knife and fork, a salad/dessert fork, a teaspoon). Many people expand this basic service by adding an extra ...

Re: Silver or silverplate?

Hello - Ercuis is a French maker of silverplate. In France a maker’s mark in a square indicates that an object is silverplated. OE stands for Orfèvrerie Ercuis; 18 represents the number of grams of silver used to silverplate a certain number of pieces of flatware. Hope this helps to clarify.

Re: Sterling Baby Cups

Children’s silver is outside my area of interest, but my observation is that it is an active collecting field in some parts of the world — cups, baptismal sets, flatware, bowls with under plates, etc. Most is 19thC and early 20thC. Some is presentation silver given by godparents or grandparents, and...

Re: French Silver wine tasting Cup, Help with hallmark ID?

This same model of tastevin is for sale at the online boutique of the Confrérie des chevaliers du tastevin, available for purchase by members only. If you contact the Confrérie they might be able to tell you the name of the maker. In any case as Trev says, it was made after 1983 of silverplate.

Re: French Silver wine tasting Cup, Help with hallmark ID?

Ste can also be an abbreviation for Société or company, which I think is more likely in this case. The maker is Société ES, or ES Company. Unfortunately I don’t know the name of this maker.

Re: Anyone knows more about this Paris maker?

Judging from the picture alone, the charge mark appears to be that of Louis Robin 1738-1744, and not that of Jean-Jacques Prévost 1762-1768. Specifically, the crowned A mark used by Robin has two “feathered” legs with scroll feet, while the Prévost mark has a fruiting olive branch on the left leg ...

Re: Anyone knows more about this Paris maker?

Hmm.. I have some questions about this attribution. How do you think Charles Proselle’s widow, said to have been active 1748-1759, could have made an object with a date stamp for 1740? Is there any evidence that this widow ever registered a mark? So far I don’t think you have a good attribution for ...

Re: to help identify Russian silvermark?

Your images look blurred on my monitor, but from what I can see the 84 is not a Russian zolotnick mark but a silverplate quality mark. The number 84 refers to the number of grams of silver used to plate a dozen flatware sets (usually 12 each of forks and tablespoons). The third mark you show is prob...

Hello - Are there any other marks on your spoon? I'm not sure that the size and placement of the mark in the lozenge-shaped reserve are right for French silver.

Nice find. These are nineteenth century Russian peasant hats, probably from different regions of Russia. If you do a web search for traditional Russian peasant dress, you might be able to identify the regions represented.

Re: French snuff box with Belgium import marks

Yes, it is possible to have a French silver object made after 1838 with a silver standard mark but without a maker’s mark. Among the reasons: the object was part of a larger set, such as a toilet set, and only some of the pieces were marked by the maker; the object was made by a wholesale manufactur...

Re: Paris ``art nouveau`` vesta case, maker ``CM``?

Very attractive vesta case. Just to add to what others have said. Murat was a prominent maker who exhibited at many international exhibitions. He did work in the Art Nouveau style. Here are my thoughts about 2 marks with CM — the one in the lozenge is definitely a maker’s mark. The other could be a ...
