Re: VEYRAT once more

Hello Georg “Very misleading.” ….“How to change matters.” Your aggressive tone is making me grumpy. It doesn’t fit the spirit of the Forum. If you read carefully all the posts about Veyrat, using the search function, you’ll find an answer to your question. By contacting the forum administrators with...

Re: Christofle cutlery set with crown marking

Hello Christofle, a silverplate manufacturer, acquired Cardeilhac in 1951, a company to which Christofle had always outsourced the manufacture of its solid silver products. Following acquisition, Christofle applied the Cardeilhac trademark to its products for marketing purposes as the company had a ...

Re: Maker & date unclear

Hello Georg Your research is on the right track. Your plate/tray was made in Strasbourg 1750-1796 as indicated by the silver standard mark of a crowned 13. Strasbourg makers worked to the standard of 917/1000. Strasbourg didn’t use charge or discharge marks. The crowned BB is exceptional, an innovat...

Re: help with maker's mark

Hello
You have an export mark for French 800 standard silver, and what appears to be a counter mark or “bigorne.” You don’t show a maker’s mark.
This object could be for serving frozen desserts, or a cheese knife, depending on length.
Regards.

Re: French maker with AEG initials

@Blakstone
Thanks for sharing your references, and your speculation that Giroux’s business was continued by his widow for a few years before Legay took over. Using all this info, at this stage Georg might want to delve deeper into the history of the firm.
Regards.

Re: French maker with AEG initials

@Blakstone
Odd that Arminjon has Giroux still working in 1811, 2 years after you say he died in 1809, and the Almanach Azur lists him until 1815.

Re: French maker with AEG initials

Hello Your cruet stand was made by Abel-Etienne Giroux, specialist in table silver, working in Paris at 51 Quai du Nord until 1806 and then 79 Quai de l’Horloge until 1811. He registered his mark AEG with 3 plumes (un panache) in 1798. No end date is given, but he was mentioned in the Almanach Azur ...

Re: Help with French Maker

Hello Your box was made by Edme Picard, specialist in snuff-boxes (la tabatière), mark EP, a crown and a crescent (une couronne et un croissant) in a lozenge-shaped reserve. Picard registered this mark 4 times. First on 3 February 1849 when he was working at 114 rue St-Martin; second and third on 16...

Re: French silver beaker

Hello You certainly don’t make this easy as your photos are so poorly focused. That said, I recollect that we’ve seen this mark O.B. twice on these forums previously, on a spoon and on a cruet stand, unfortunately without attribution. The photos have disappeared from the forum. See https://www.925-1...

Re: Unrecognized French silver maker 1819-38

Hello Your vermeil spoons were made in Paris by François-Pamphile Josan (Jozan) maker of small tableware at 19 rue Simon-le-Franc. His mark was FJ, symbol two crossed boatman’s oars with a pellet on each side (deux rames de batelier en sautoir, un point de chaque côté). Josan first registered on 12 ...

To add to blakstone’s excellent information, Nocq lists the father as François-Elisabeth Yvelin, dit Leprince. Yvelin senior registered his mark on 6 May 1786, initials FEY, symbol a triangle with the 2 grains under a crowned fleur-de lys. Alphabetically, he is the next-to-last entry in Nocq. See No...

Re: 1835 Paris Snuff Box

You’re welcome! The engraved personalization post-dates manufacture of the box, as Hyvelin was no longer working after 1822. The box is large at 13 cm. in length. That said, I’ve no particular expertise in silver boxes, so can’t answer if yours falls within the norm for snuff boxes in terms of size....

Re: 1835 Paris Snuff Box

Hello Your snuff box was made in Paris of 800 standard silver between 1819 and 1838 as shown by the head of Raphaël facing left in an oval reserve (third photo). You also have a guarantee mark for medium objects of a Gorgon head (called a masque facial) in a circular reserve (first photo). I’m not s...

Re: Paris silversmith ID

My pleasure to help. Yes, the head of Minerva facing right in a circular reserve is the guarantee mark for medium-weight objects made in Paris from 1809-1819. So all the marks are present and in concordance. The “empty” reserve might just be a worn standard mark, depending on its placement. Otherwis...
