Re: Silver & wood salad servers

Hi, lovely pieces. I believe your servers are made by Mexican Silver Smith J. Sotelo. I don't have my book with me so I am not 100% on the maker but I am fairly confident that they are of Mexican origin.

Re: William & Mary Geboortelepel

That was my feeling as well, the spoon is in far too good of condition. It hasn't even tarnished/patined entirely. It's probably even newer than early 20th century. But any other information you have will be much appreciated. I still think the spoon is fun and whoever engraved it did a beautiful job...

Re: William & Mary Geboortelepel

Thank you for the information, I was hoping you (as the resident Dutch silver expert) would be able to shed some light on the piece. I love these "zilveren Friese sierlepel" they are fun to collect and since I have Voet's book on Frisian makers, if there is a marker mark I can sometimes fi...

William & Mary Geboortelepel

I very recently acquired this spoon. It has no marks, not even rubbed marks (I scoured every inch). It is in crisp condition with very minimal signs of wear. It is definitely silver but my gut tells me that it is not particularly old considering the condition. Wasn't sure if anyone can shed any ligh...

Re: Philip Syng Sr?

Thank you for that update and additional information. To me, that is extremely interesting. I wonder how many old spoons were turned? As for the true date of my spoon, I'll probably never know. I took it on Antiques Roadshow last year (I was the only person in line at the silver table sadly) and the...

Hi, it's the Birmingham England import mark used since 1904. Cant really make out the letter though to accurately date it. I think its a V for 1945

Re: Philip Syng Sr?

According to Catherine Hollan in her excellent book on Philadelphia Silversmiths, he died in Maryland in 1739. She doesn't make any mention of Cape May but other sources and a website dedicated the Philip Syng Sr. Great grandson mention that he did move to Cape May in 1724 where he met his second wi...

Re: Philip Syng Sr?

The date doesn't seem like it was engraved by the same person who engraved the monogram which is one reason I question it but also yes, the style seems too modern for 1718, especially for an American made spoon. I was unaware that people used to have rattails removed from old spoons (learn something...

Philip Syng Salt shovel?

ok, this is my last posting. I live in Cape May Co. so this is my potentially most personally exciting find. I found this at a local junk shop that specialized in house cleanouts. Is this salt shovel the work of Philip Syng Sr or Jr? according to my sources, Sr did work in Cape May NJ for a few year...

The piece is dated but I think the date was added later. The bowl is elliptical, not egg-shaped. Anyone good with early American tablespoons who could roughly date this piece and confirm the maker? https://s19.postimg.cc/ha1p4vvlb/IMG_6970.jpg https://s19.postimg.cc/e375l9qkv/IMG_6971.jpg https://s1...

Percy Jackson Higgs? or Isle of Jersey?

I picked this up awhile ago hoping I would figure out the maker later but so far I am stuck. Its a Guernsey / Jersey Milk Can but I don't know that it is from the Channel Islands. I have a few books on silver from the islands but this maker is never mentioned. The marks look like English provincial ...

Re: Old Gorham Silver Piece 11oz "1 77"

Hi this piece is definitely Silver Soldered (aka silver plate). Probably dates from 1880 - 1920 and given how very very used it looks it was probably used in a hotel or restaurant. Most silver soldered stuff was because it could hold up to more wear the regular plating.

Re: Where is this spoon from?

I am in the scrap silver/gold business and honestly, the English stuff usually is more heavily plated but for the most part, depending on what base metal the silver is plated over, the acid test is not reliable. You have to really know your marks but the more you handle silver and silverplate the ea...

Re: Where is this spoon from?

Unless you file into the piece, and often deeply, acid testing silverplate is useless

Re: Does anybody recognise these marks?

According to Jackson's guide, it is an as of yet unattributed Yorkshire silversmith. The mark in the book is almost exactly the same except it has the SS crown mark twice and no thistle mark. The same marks were found on a communion cup and flagon dated 1690 which would correspond to the same period...
