Re: unknown mark - 930 silver tea strainer. Europe? US? Mexico? Japan?

yes, no repousse attempt but they did smooth it out. On the back of your strainer, it doesn't look like they made any effort to make it look nice which is something I see a lot of in pieces from the later 20th century that are copying earlier works. I think there was a less discerning and knowledgea...

Re: A real mystery...

In the 4th and last picture of your original posting, there is a writing on the handle that I can only sort of make out, it looks like P I N? if you could get a better picure of that I think it might lead to something.

Re: unknown mark - 930 silver tea strainer. Europe? US? Mexico? Japan?

The more I think about it the more I think you may have come across a clue. The strainer that looks just like yours in the other posting has a Hanau mark for Storck & Sinsheimer which is believed to have been absorbed by Gebrüder Neumann in 1926. Perhaps this is a later hallmark of theirs? It do...

Is this Dutch?

Just wondering about this spoon, I have never seen an original 16/17th century version or a later copy with a stem like this. It looks like it has some honest polishing wear but maybe not enough for over 300 years. I lean towards Dutch origin but basically as a hunch for more than any other reason. ...

Re: unknown mark - 930 silver tea strainer. Europe? US? Mexico? Japan?

Hi again, I did mean 20th century, I lot of these kinda sloppy electrotype pieces started showing up in antique shows around the 1960's-1970's and the mark doesn't look too old but I could be wrong. Also only the underside is sloppy, the top is very nice and a lot better than a lot of the "fake...

Re: Old Silver spoon - Help

It could be older and the bowl is just repaired but I wouldn't count on silver purity tests to gauge the age, with many towns laws being different from region to country throughout Europe and this piece is definitely Continental European no matter when it was made.

Re: Ornate Italian Spoon

Hi, its a spoon from Bad Kissingen Germany (but referred to by the generic term Hanau Silver). Looks like part of the of David Kugelmann mark, can't really see the other pseudo mark but regardless it is German late 19th, early 20th century Historicist style and make. The maker was known to have exhi...

Re: Spain?

It definitely looks like Madrid but if it is Madrid it is missing a mark. It should also have the city shield/crest. Also, in my two references, none of the other marks are listed. If it is Madrid it would date from 1831, thus the numbers under the castle. I have limited hands-on experience with Spa...

Re: Old Silver spoon - Help

As speculated earlier, this piece was made in the 17th century style but actually made sometime from the late 19th century to first half of the 20th century and most likely in either Holland or Hanau Germany.

Hi, probably Dutch or German (Hanau most likely), looks like later 20th-century rococo revival. Not sure who the maker is but also looks like made as an electrotype. Someone may recognize the makers mark and shed more specific information though.

Re: A PUNCH STRAINER

Most Likely the other mark is the date letter but it would help if you would send an up close pic of the other marks. The makers mark looks like Philip Shaw known to be in business from 1730-1733, possibly longer. The next mark is the crowned leopard for London followed by lion passant for sterling....

Re: 17th century Bath Knife & Fork?

Thank you, Trev. Beyond Grimwades mention of him I can find no additional information or even mention of him but he does seem a possible fit and probably more likely one than George Watkins. The little V looking mark directly beneath the GW is probably just from use and not actually part of the mark...

Re: 17th century Bath Knife & Fork?

I have a wonderful book "The collection of the Worshipful Company of Cutlers of London Part One: London-Made Knives and their marks" by Keith Hinde & John Herbert but alas this mark is not listed. But it is still helpful to roughly dating the piece

I realize my pictures might be confusing so I should mention that the fork is only marked GW and only once, I just added multiple pics of the same marks for different angles in case any of them didn't come up clear

Re: Who’s mark is underneath George Ferris’ mark?

you can definitely see part of the original makers mark underneath the GF, also it looks a lot in the picture like the original monogram and possibly some of the original decoration was also erased for the new one.

17th century Bath Knife & Fork?

I acquired this set a couple of years ago from someone in England but they knew nothing about them. At the time I thought maybe it was by George Watkins of Bath, England based on a mark I saw in Jacksons Guide. But the more I learn about silver the more I wonder if that could even be accurate. What ...

Re: Silver & wood salad servers

I checked Hougart's little book of Mexican Silver Hallmarks and it does not mention who the maker is other than that they are an unidentified Taxco silversmith. This silversmith also once used the Eagle1, eagle 3 and TS-22 narks. This set is definitely Mexican though
