Well I am glad nobody took me up on either of my bets because I stand corrected. Cheryl is definitely right.

Re: Gorham & Co 5-1/2" Coin/Sterling Ladle

Buff the whole thing and see if it changes. I've never seen 'Gorham & Co' on anything but silver plate. Most old pieces of Gorham Coin silver would usually have the Gorham logo (The lion, anchor and the G) only, later they would also add Coin or Sterling. But just because I haven't seen it does ...

Re: Gorham & Co 5-1/2" Coin/Sterling Ladle

This piece is definitely, bet my life, silver plated. You can see the base metal (which looks like brass or some sort of alloy) in all the areas that were regularly exposed to mustard (or whatever condiment it was used to serve)

English Provincial Seal Top Spoon Unknown maker

I don't have much hope anyone will recognize this maker but it is my first English seal top spoon. The finial is pinprick engraved S*S over I*A over 1651. It is only marked on the inside of the bowl. and the spoon measures about 7.5" long. https://i.postimg.cc/QMWCmbzR/IMG-3176.jpg https://i.po...

Re: Augsburg dish.

If you are referring to the Dish Peter posted, it was listed at the Auction House ' Drouot' which is the French auction house Hotel Drouot, the auction ended last year. I cannot find another one of these dishes except for that one and this one (where even the markings look to be identically placed)....

Re: Augsburg dish.

Auction houses get things wrong. Sometimes they don't even have silver experts on staff. I have followed Drouot via their app for a few years and they often get Non-French silver identifications wrong. Just like Bukowskis often gets anything but Scandanavian silver wrong. I recently made a friend in...

Re: Augsburg dish.

It looks to me that that is not a similar dish but the exact same one. I see it was auctioned on Drouot a year ago. If they are indeed different dishes than yes, they are probably Hanau but even hand crafted Hanau pieces will not be exactly the same. Also none of the Hanau marks I have seen are dead...

Re: Augsburg dish.

Well, I am going to be the dissenting opinion here but I believe it is old. I can't make out the makers mark but the Augsburg mark looks good. The style of the dish also looks correct for 1660-1720 era. I don't have it in hand so I can't be 100% certain but if I saw it I would have snatched it up.

Re: 17th century Dutch Cowrie Shell Trefid Spoon?

Here are some better pics of the spoon just because. To answer the question about how they put the rim around the shell, I think they left flaps of silver 'open', dropped the shell in, and then bent the flaps over the shell and thensoldered it. you can see the solder lines every 3/4 of inch around i...

17th century Dutch Cowrie Shell Trefid Spoon?

I'm not sure if this is definitely Dutch but I bought it from a Zeeland Auction house and it has later Holland crowned O tax marks. The mark looks to me to be an MR with the two letters combined but I might be reading the mark wrong or looking at it the wrong way. I know this is a long shot but I fi...

Osterode basting/stuffing Spoon c.1728

Here is a fun spoon I recently acquired. The town mark looks a lot like a D but I am pretty sure it's an O with a crown for the town of Osterode in Lower Saxony. The maker's mark is hard to read but it definitely reads DA over a K which could be Dietrich Andreas Kohlrausch of Osterode. It is engrave...

Re: Help with origin and age too

Hmmh, I am going to say it was definitely made in the last Millenium, definitely made out of material, Possibly German but it's definitely made on earth and the maker is also from the earth and the odds are good that it was a man of European ancestry.

Cowrie shell spoon by unknown maker

I am not sure this spoon is English to any degree but this is my first stop in identifying it. My second guess is it's possibly Dutch. If anyone is familiar with it I would be grateful. It is marked HF twice on the underside, there are no other markings. The shell is faded on the sides from use. I a...

Re: Super Inox AP 'fake" silver 800 cutlery?

usually, when things bubble up like that, it's because plating over zinc is usually the culprit. Some more things to consider are perhaps your silver acid has gone bad? It doesn't stay good forever and the silver testing acid usually goes bad faster than gold acids. Also, How does your acid react to...
