I'm not to sure about this, but maybe it's Joseph Seymour whose mark is shown on this site in this link: http://www.925-1000.com/americansilver_S.html" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false; Also, that mark might clean up some. I'm not sure if it's truly adviseable, but for myself, I use soap...

It's a pretty safe bet that this is silverplate. If it doesn't say sterling, it's not sterling works pretty good with twentieth century American silver.

Also, to me, that looks like a carafe. An attractive set nonetheless.

This not an real help, but the letters strike me as W G Co or M G Co, and the knife is not American. Are there any marks on the ferrule which is often sterling on these mother of pearl handled items?

George Lindner was born in Germany in about 1797. He was still an active silversmith in Philadelphia in 1870 and paid taxes on his business throughout the American Civil War.
George's son Herman was also a Philadelphia silversmith and is listed as such from 1850 until at least 1880.

For the Listing of American Silversmiths Newell Harding &

It maybe worth mentioning that Newell Harding & Co silversmiths continued to be listed in Boston directories at various addresses until 1889. The final address for the company was 297 Washington, and it is listed in the The Boston Directory No LXXXV for the year commencing July 1, 1889, Boston: ...

About pseudo marks, from my own limited experience, there is no one right answer to your question, but here is an entry on this site that sums them up very well:

Actually, I do find specific Longworth New York City Directory mention of the jeweler William W White at 98(sp?) Bowery in 1828 and again at 68 Bowery in 1838. He's looking even better.

This is by no means a positive attribution, but if the spoon were mine, William W White who was born in about 1800 in Virginia and worked mid nineteenth century in New York, New York as a jeweler and watchmaker would be at the top of my list for a likely retailer. He was at 68 Bowery from the late 1...

Well it's a starting place at best and better than nowhere at all. I have to guess your piece could be New Orleans because it's marked brothers and not & brother. Going by their age at that time, no more than mid twenties, these brothers weren't in New Orleans too many years. I lean toward retai...

This is not guaranteed, but in my own experience with these sets, and likewise for others that I have observed, carving sets have been typical bridal gifts. Your images look like they're probably going to need resizing. Take a look at this reference that is on this site.

In general when you say boat, Helsinki is the first thing that comes to mind for me. Maybe that is what you were thinking of, but it's not that in this case.
