The first character can be the Mandarin surname Wén. It can also be an old classifier for coins which may even fit in this case. Sorry to raise another question.

The box of sippers still sits on my computer's tower. Who would have ever imagined them ending up in such an odd place. I'd better do something with them.

Silversmiths and jewelers quite often transition to other lines of work. Their backgrounds give them a pretty wide open field to choose from when economic necessities or other factors call for a job change. In the second half of the nineteenth century, Pardon M Stone of Providence, Rhode Island went...

Anybody recognize these marks? Scottish provincial (Greenock) is my uninformed guess. Thank you in advance for any help that might be given.

Although Ovington, Read, Alexander and Samuel Benedict were watch dealers at 5 Wall, New York City in the 1850's, the first listing of Benedict Bros at 5 Wall is found in the 1860 Trow's New York City Directory. At that time Ovington, Read and Samuel Benedict were at the 5 Wall business address.

Welcome to the forums!

Put a "D" at the beginning of the number, and your patent search will probably work. The "D" is for design patent. The inventor is George Schmidt, and his name can be searched too.

Good luck.

Listed in Sketchley's Birmingham, Wolverhampton & Walsall Directory. Third edn., 1767, SKETCHLEY, James. Birmingham Printed by & for J. Sketchley

It's not much of a consolation, but I think for a while flatware manufacturers tried to dub stainless as the "new sterling." They may not have given up the idea yet. I'm afraid it doesn't work well for me though.
