Re: Samuel Lynch Spoon, 1799

By family tradition, he was sent to Philadelphia by his father Simon (Simeon) to learn the clock making trade. He returned some time later to Cane Creek and established a small clock and watch shop. It is not known (outside the family history) that he worked in silver in any formal manner. He has no...

Since the piece in question is in an ongoing auction (offered by the OP, I presume), I will refrain from answering.

Re: What-is-it question CLXXXII.

You have a much better chance of dying in a car accident on the way to work then getting ill from eating raw oysters -- presuming, of course, that you have a basic understanding of the goods and their season.

Re: What-is-it question CLXXXII.

The oysters would have been half shucked -- the top shell prised open, but the meat left attached to the lower shell. The oyster might be left plain, sauced, or just dressed with a bit of lemon juice and served on a bed of ice and sea weed.

nice tongs -- right maker? right date?

Ran across these sorting out a box of odds and ends http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~silversmiths/SalonImages/tongs/tongs2.jpg The marks are quite clear and there's a date letter, which appears to be a lower case i. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~silversmiths/Salo...

Re: Philip Hulbert - date correct in Currier?

The mark is too poor in quality for any use -- I should never have put it up and have now removed it.
Good images are always welcome and appreciated.

Re: Philip Hulbert - date correct in Currier?

The Huntington shown (from my site) is quite dreadful, but the best I had found. Here is a somewhat better version, recently added, which matches that shown in Flynt & Fales, Hammerslough, etc. http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~silversmiths/SalonImages/HuntingtonPhilip.jpg Here i...

Re: Philip Hulbert - date correct in Currier?

Likely Philip Huntington. Currier should be used with a goodly grain of salt and as a last resort; it was written 74 years ago, the marks were rather crudely drawn, and the attributions published without independent verification.

No. Simply being a jeweler has no bearing on the subject.

Meriden Britannia silverplate (and not art deco -- just a badly conceived variation on American colonial)

It is now suspected that the mark is D. B. Hempstead & Co, based on pieces with a Georgia provenance.

Re: Paul Revere identification

I'm not sure how you decided that "few" were made. The 25 mentioned in the link are actually quite a large number, given the period (and is also too small a number: 32 are recorded in public collections alone). Kane's Massachusetts Silversmiths shows the known and vetted marks. It is also ...
