Mystery spoon

Hi there - is anyone able to identify the marks on this bright cut teaspoon dating from around 1800. The spoon, while charming, is rather roughly made, with hammer marks still visible where the handle joins the bowl. The engraving is also a little crude. I guess this points to a provincial or coloni...

Help with marks

Hi- can anyone help with these marks on a fiddle pattern teaspoon c 1820. Maker possibly I.L. Date letter R seems to be over striking another mark, with possibly a turret in it. Newcastle or Exeter? Thanks John https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg

Colonial Fork?

Hi - Is anyone able to identify where this fork may have come from ? It is 7.5 inches long and has initials RJM engraved to the terminal. Stamped twice with makers mark R.R or possibly R.P in a rectangular punch. In between the two makers marks is another almost triangular stamp. Difficult to read t...

Wow - what a surprise! I would never have discovered that on my own. I wonder how it got to the UK? Many thanks Blackstone. John

Re: Dutch? Belguim? French?

Hi - I have added another (hopefully clearer) photo of what is presumably the makers mark in the lozenge shape stamp. The mark is not that clear, but my best reading of it is J at the top of the lozenge, then AS then F at the bottom (though this may be a P). There could be a dot after the J, but thi...

Dutch? Belguim? French?

Hi - can anyoneone help identify the marks on this large silver fish slice. It is nearly 13 inches long and from its style I guess it dates from 1st half 19th century. Would be grateful for any information. Many thanks John http://i50.tinypic.com/2zsv30w.jpg http://i47.tinypic.com/wbv0pk.jpg http://...

Re: Spanish Incense Boat

Good evening Funkel - I am really very pleased to have some information and definite identification of the town marks on the 'naveta', and even though you could not identify the maker, it is good to see another example of his mark. I had expected no results and thought that it would be a mystery for...

Spanish Incense Boat

Hi - can any one shed any light on this silver incense boat. I believe it to be Spanish, but could be wrong. It is 120mm high and 220 mm long and weighs 615 grams (21.5 ounces). The decoration is rather crudely done. It is hallmarked on the covers with what appears to be a town mark (an A above a fo...

Pierre Harache ?

Hi - could this mark possibly that of Pierre Harache? It is on a motespoon from I think mid 1690's. If it is, why would such an illustrious silversmith be tinkering with a humble motespoon? The mark consists of what looks like a crown above, then two crosslets above PH all above a blob? Any other co...

Dresden ?

Hi - Can anyone help identify the age and maker of this circular box with hinged cover. It is 40 mm in diameter and is of good gauge silver and looks to me to date from late 18th or early 19th century. The town mark appears to be for Dresden and makers mark IA over S ? Would be grateful for any help...

Dear Hose and Tosten. Many thanks for sharing your knowledge. I suspected Bergen because of the 7 dots, but have never seen that particular Bergen mark. Thanks again John

Scandinavian ? brooch

Hi - can anyone help identify the marks on this silver and enamel brooch. They look Scandinavian so I will start in this section - but of course I could be completly wrong. It measures 60mm across. Thanks for your help. John http://i47.tinypic.com/2n2gr7.jpg http://i48.tinypic.com/5tryip.jpg

Thanks Hephaistos - your information about this drinking vessel is much appreciated. It is interesting how similar the names are for similar cups in different countries are: eg: kowsch in Russian, kausa in Finland, kasa in Sweden and quiach (pronounced kwaich) in Scotland. John

Re: Dutch Silver Biscuit Box

Hi Oel - Many thanks for your comments. Yes I was suspicious and you have confirmed this. Fortunately it was sold to me as a "silver box" without pretending to be anything else, at less than its bullion value. Surprisingly it is made from high grade silver - tested to at least 925 - the on...

Thanks again Hose. I have found some reference to a similar (but older) bowl from Denmark called a 'kovsken'. I guess this is similar to Russian kvosh. Rgds John
