French Silver Buckle

Hi - Can anyone help identify the marks on this large buckle, which I believe may be French. From its style I would say it dates from around 1800. It measures 120mm x 65mm. The maker's mark is partially struck with the letters W A or N A with a device between visible at the bottom. The other marks a...

Re: Confused !!

Thank you Maurice and Zilver. I will try and get a better picture of the makers mark in natural light on the weekend. I guess Jacques-Louis Berger would make the cup circa 1820. Thanks again. John

Confused !!

Hi all - I am confused by these marks on this French beaker, which seem to contradict each other. The beaker is about 77mm high and 75 mm in diameter. The marks appear to be as follows: on base 1: Female head facing forward with P on her right shoulder, I believe for 1793. 2: Bearded man facing righ...

Re: Large French Spoon

Many thanks Maurice - this is really interesting. I have found reference to a Haitian French Colonial spoon, on an American auction site, unfortunately no picture of the marks - see picture and description below (apologies for quality of pic). However regarding size of the marks, I presume that on t...

Re: Large French Spoon

Intriguing!! I had never considered the possibility of French Caribbean or other French Colonial. Could Canada been a possibility? The marks are not huge, being approximately 8.5mm high and 5.5mm across at the base. It may not be clear in the pictures, but there is some faceting to the drop at the b...

Re: Large French Spoon

Hi Maurice - many thanks for your considered reply. Yes, I guess we may never know the answer, but it is really interesting to know that there are other identified pieces with the same or similar marks. The size of the marks are certainly larger than the usual 19th century French marks, and look of ...

Large French Spoon

Hi All - I tried on the forum a few years ago to get identification of maker and approximate date of this French spoon, but without success. Maybe time to try again! It is a large basting spoon, 333 mm long and weighing 186 grams. It is stamped 3 times with the makers mark, there are no other marks....

Re: Help with French marks

Hello Maurice, I am sorry my description of the letters of the name is not very good. The only part of the name that I am quite confident with is: POULIOU. The letters before this are not at all clear. I have had another close look at the maker's mark under a loupe, but cannot see another letter. Th...

Re: Help with French marks

Many thanks for the information, Maurice. I have attached photographs of both ends of the snake handle. The owners name is very unclear but my best attempt is: J buy D POULIOU. Regards John https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg https://www.925-1000.com/pics/Ximg.jpg

Help with French marks

Hi - can anyone help identify the marks on this silver wine taster. The quality of the marks and my photographs are not brilliant but the marks are: on the rim, a man's head facing left. On the base, what seems to be a woman's head facing right with a 2 above in a deformed oval stamp. Makers mark P ...

What and where from??

Hi All - an interesting silver item that looks a little like a chatelaine holder or possibly would have a belt slipping through it. With a silver loop to presumably hang or tie things from. This loop hangs from a heavy cast silver hand. The hallmarks are P, IO (makers mark?) or possibly 10 and M. It...

Re: Dutch spoon - False marks?

Hi Oel. Thank you once again for sharing your knowledge. I shall remain hopeful that it is genuine, but am aware of the pitfalls. Would be great if the maker could be identified. As always, much appreciated. John

Dutch spoon - False marks?

Hi - Can anyone help with the marks on this presumably Dutch spoon. It is 18cm long and has a ridged rat tail to the bowl. The back of the bowl has an assay scrape ? It has 4 marks: Amsterdam town mark, top bit of rampant lion, date letter c or e and makers mark. There is also an engraved device wit...
