Re: Peculiar markings on 925 icon

Mind my interfering in this conversation, but I agree with Amena! The original riza on an genuine icon is a very thin silver (sometimes even gold) "cover" in order to protect the painting under it. ON cheap icons the riza is brass sometimes plated with silver. Please keep in mind that in t...

Re: Is this solid S950 silver?

A good decision not to buy it. Please keep in mind that anybody can write anything on a piece of paper and glue it on anything. At first glance it might look good but in the long run...... Let me put it this way: You buy a piece like this and you maybe for some reason decide later to get rid of it.....

Re: Is this solid S950 silver?

The simple answer to your question is NO! Only the very thin cover could be silver, but....? Please read the rest. This icon is a newly made copy of an icon in the Byzantine Museum. It is written on the label, please read it too!!!! Sorry, but I would call it tourist junk! Hand made but still! The m...

Re: Russian napkin rings – trompe-l'oeil

I'm sorry Mart, but your explanation is not fully correct. Tallinn/Reval assaying office was shut down in 1873 and the assaying was partly overtaken by mobile assayers. Therefore the Tallinn master sometimes, rather often actually, had to send their objects for assaying to either St. Petersburg or R...

Re: Gazyr - Газырь

@Silverstone

Of course you will find the letter I as well as И in the Cyrillic alphabet E.g. Belorussian and Ukrainian alphabet use I instead of И . Both are the same letter as Latin I.

Please cut and enlarge the pictures to the marks only, thank you.

Re: Help with identifying Moscow maker's marks

According to Postnikova #2104 Dubrovin's punch was НЛ but according to Ivanov it was НД (ref. Green Ivanov p. 609)So what is correct?

Re: Help with identifying Moscow maker's marks

Interesting case, but could be him because Dubrovin's full name was НИКОЛАЙ ЛУКИЧ ДУБРОВИН. However, if Dubrovin punched НЛ, who punched НД in Moscow 1826. I have a photo of such a mark.

Re: Gazyr - Газырь

Actually a Russian Cyrillic name can be transliterated in many ways depending on to what language it is transliterated. There are no common/international "rules". In your case we have КОДЖОЯНЦ. My suggestion would be KODGOYANTS or KODGOJANTS. It is based on how the name Fabergé is spelled ...

Re: Russian napkin rings – trompe-l'oeil

The punch JAL most likely belongs to Julius Eduard August Lohfert in Tallinn He was active as from 1868 (or 1872) to 1896. The punches were IL, IAL and the mentioned JAL. To my understanding he didn't work in St. Petersburg. The reason why you sometimes might find the mentioned mark in connection to...

Re: Interesting Russian object

Now we are getting somewhere. The maker's mark is to the left but unfortunately I cannot decipher it, What two (?) letters do you see?
The other mark shows the assayer, who is Ivan Yestigneyev 1870-1891 in St. Petersburg. Unfortunately I don't know what the object is.

Re: Please help with Russian 56 Mark on French Gold Pin

AG2012 Please note! We are now talking about this IMPORT mark but not about a gold fineness mark in general on a Russian made object. To my knowledge there is no Russian 72 import mark for gold. Nothing prohibits to punch a lower fineness import mark on an object made in higher fineness. The import ...

Re: Coin Silver (?) 5-1/2" spoon

Yes the assayer/guardein (uppsidedown M-mark) is Møller but assayers didn't make anything! They were officials guaranteeing the fineness only. I believe the OM mark belongs to the maker and he would be Ole Peter Mønichen 1803-1853 (He made spoons). He was active in Copenhagen 1830-1846. Then he move...

Re: Please help with Russian 56 Mark on French Gold Pin

The Russian 56 mark is not deceiving anything. It is quite in order! Yes, it is punched later by the Russian authorities. Please see below: This French made pin was imported to Russia after 1882. The 56 mark is a Russian import mark, implemented in 1882. The 56 is the gold fineness mark in zolotnik,...

Re: "F.WST" St Petersburg Maker. Wennestrom??

Firstly, you are not giving any measure!!! Secondly, I don't believe it is a condiment spoon but a scoop, anticipating it has the measures for a scoop (30-40 cm of total length and bowl's Ø ~10cm). However, if it is smaller (10-12cm of total length) then you could call it condiment spoon. The round ...

Re: "F.WST" St Petersburg Maker. Wennestrom??

Happy New Year everybody Yes, it is Wennerström, actually Olof not OlAf. He was born 1796 in St. Petersburg, became apprentice 1817 and master 1830. His punches were FWST and FW. However, it seems to that also F.WST! The mark WS has nothing to do with Wennerstöm. To my understanding these initials i...

Re: Souvenir spoon mystery

Yes the image could be better and bigger. However, I'll try my best shot anyway. It is not Sweden (three crowns) but Finland (one crown only) and the maker's mark could be G.A.S. That would be Gustaf Adolf Strömbäck in Helsinki. The half moon is not the moon but a boat for Helsinki's crest. The year...

The mark can also be found in Marc Rosenberg's Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen as #2432. Unfortunately the maker seems to be unknown to name.

@Dad Yes, they are SOOT MARKS from Bäcksbacka's book. Those marks are usually made from original marks, but......? However, no book contains the absolute truth. There is not a single book about silver marks that doesn't have some inaccuracies even faults in it (Marina Postnikova's book Included). Pl...

In other words, you cannot present anything supporting what you have written only empty words and again words...!
What a shame I had faith in you! As to me this discussion has ended.
