In my eyes yes it is, what else could it be? How about the maker's mark, does it give any clues?

@Dad
Thank you very much. Unfortunately my Russian language skill is not enough to read the extensive dissertation. If you could point out what is the most important chapter in this matter it would be of help.

Re: Icona, Christ Pantocrator

Thank you Dad very valuable information. However, I don't quite catch you. Do you mean that Senatov actually assayed in Arkhangelsk in 1778 and that the first assay office in Kiev was established not earlier than in 1827? In this case is the unknown assayer ВФ mentioned in PL #580 also misplaced and...

Re: Icona, Christ Pantocrator

Good morning Dad, thanks for asking. The information is found in green Ivanov on page 41. It states Kiev, Ivan Serebrenikov. It matches with Postnikova #570, IC 1778, unknown assayer. I have put a question mark regarding the working period because it seems to that he was in Vologda at the same time ...

Re: Help with egyptian hallmark

I promised to revert to the flower in the Egyptian hallmark when I have waterproof information. I have now: It is a lotus flower. I was wrong, sorry about that. However, kindly spare me from advises like this in the future. My advise to you; please stop spreading misinformation. Nobody is perfect, e...

Re: Icona, Christ Pantocrator

Yes it is a fake but not only for the 72 zolotnik fineness mark. This value was the common silver fineness before 1798 when it was raised to not less than 84 zolotniki. Still valid today. Below the year 1778 in the hallmark should be the assayers initials in Kiev. They are I·C for Ivan Serebrenikov ...

Re: Circa 1760s (?) Rococo Sauce Spoon, Maker's Mark "JF"

I have a candidate for you: Jørgen Friis in Randers/DK active 1773-1790. His mark is very similar to your mark. The problem, however, is that there are no town mark on your ladle, but as Aguest stated 10.3. at 6:31pm sometimes the town mark is not punched.

Re: Authentic or fake?

Well, if you see it that way, the bargain hunter has no knowledge of what he is buying. A hunter who knows something about silver immediately sees that a ring with such marks screams FAKE, FAKE!!! Irrespective how well it is made. In addition, it is a well known fact that fakers very often punch the...

Re: Authentic or fake?

@oel
Because the stupid faker as usual hasn't bother to investigate where the mark should be punched and not either how Hollming's maker's mark exactly looks like. In addition the font in both the hallmark and maker's mark is incorrect.

Re: Authentic or fake?

If it is possible, return this fake and claim refunding.
Usually we do not explain why a fake is a fake, but I make an exception this time in order to warn unknowing buyers. The hallmark is rather good, but its locations shows that the faker has no knowledge of where the marks should be punched.

@mk209 Yes, Millers is not worth its price. However, everything is not "incorrect" in it. It has its value e.g. as you mentioned "a beginners book". Anyway, There are no perfect books, everyone has its flaws, errors and imperfections. The great misery is, that those flaws etc. in...

@Peter Please note that is is not a question of disinformation, but a problem with conflicting information in various sources. I'd like to know what is the actual truth. Moreover, yes I wrote that there are mistakes and fault in every book I know. That is a known unfortunate fact. What proves that W...

Re: Help with egyptian hallmark

@Oel Yes let the records show that your quote is one of the errors in the World Hallmarks and not the only one. There are many errors in it. In my input I wrote stylized papyrus flower. Here a picture of a stylized papyrus flower. https://i.postimg.cc/vBwqLNFk/Papyrus.png Here a picture of the Egypt...

Re: Help with egyptian hallmark

For the records:
The given 925-link states that it is a lotus flower, which is incorrect. The Egyptian control mark is actually a stylized papyrus flower since 1940. The lotus flower resembles a water lily.

Hi This is not at all "my cup of tea", but I happen to have a book with American silver smiths' marks. When Matt managed to place the marks in America (USA) I took a look in the book and found a very similar mark in it. The frame differs a bit, but? Anyway, ID could be Jonathan Davenport i...

Re: Enamel cigarette case

Pure guesses, but I reckon I see ЯЛ in the kokoshnik. That would be Jakov Lyapunov in St. Petersburg 1899-1904. It matches with the kokoshnik 1899-1908 for the year 1899. The maker's mark is morу difficult. It could be AH or АИ .or or.... but but but ???? Clean the marks and use a good magnifier and...

@Ubaranda OK, I shall immediately re-correct it, thanks! It is interesting how he writes his forename Савел iй . Usually it would be written ... ий . Maybe he was from Ukraine? Anyway, there are errors in practically all books. I pointed out an error in Ivanov and have registered more than a hundred...
