Re: Unknown maker from Riga

My pleasure, I don't directly "disagree," please note that I wrote "COULD". It was only a suggestion. However, Yes I noted Bonacs, but he was active in Saldus (Kuldiga). There is nothing written of him working in Riga. Kuldiga has a town mark of its own and on your spoons you can...

Re: Unknown maker from Riga

Hello Ubaranda! have no knowledge of who it might be, but I give you my best shot! If we anticipate that the mark's initials are JB it could, note COULD , be Jānis Bētinš active in Riga (1874-1955). Unfortunately his mark is not known, but the initials... Anyway they matches with the assayer's (ИС I...

Re: Help identifying maker

Well Juke, Interesting points, but I still stick to Dad's opinion, something is not in place here. Take a closer look at the "arrow's tip on the hallmark on the clock. I believe you will find that the end "looks" like a stylized tip of an arrow but it should show a scepter's top. Now ...

Re: Art nouveau napkin ring - probably Danish???

Two questions:

1. What makes you think it is Danish?
2. What makes you think the marks are silver marks?

Re: Help identifying maker

After a closer look I share Dad's opinion. Nice doing Dad! Unfortunately I didn't pay any particular attention to the hallmark but to the maker's mark only. Sorry about that. Anyway, to find genuine Fabergé made objects on today's markets is RARE very RARE! The current markets seem to be almost floo...

Re: A Danish sugar sifter

Well Amena, the problem with such pages showing initials only is that the FRAME (or no frame) is always of upmost importance regarding many makers' marks and should if possible be shown or at least mentioned! In addition use the pages you refer to as indicating info only. Always check from as many a...

Re: help to determine the age of two Margret cups

I have somehow understood like you that the mentioned marks would be year or date marks on Danish silver. Unfortunately I have not managed to find any information verifying that. However, I happen to know that U9 could/would be 1971 (maybe!). Counting back from this year gives a result that F9 would...

Re: A Danish sugar sifter

It could be (maybe) Peter Hertz. He was born 1810, became master 1835 and passed away 1885. The Guardein Simon Groth assayed in Copenhagen 1863-1904. What you can see from the poorly struck/worn town mark is that it is most likely from the period of 1859-69, but??? What caught my eyes was that you m...

Re: Unknown Makers Mark on Large Spoon First Kokoshnik

Agree with Mart. It is the mark of Mausha Chaimas Goldas ( Моуша Хайм Лейбоеич Гольдъ) He was born in 1866. In 1887 he became apprentice in his father's (Lejba (Лейба) 1896?-1908) workshop in Vilna/LT. Mausha graduated in 1892.
Artsibashev assayed in Vilna/Vilnius LT 1884-1888 and again 1898-1914.

Re: Silver salts marked 13 1/4 IT

Unfortunately no, the years are "around"(as I also wrote). The silver marking system in Norway was rather inexact/insufficient in the old days (still is a bit). Moreover, they have used a huge variety of silver fineness in the past 12,0, 12,1/2, 13, 13,1/3L, 13,1/4L, 14,0, 14,0L... to 1892...

Re: Silver salts marked 13 1/4 IT

Mind my saying but the fineness of 131/4 lot was used in Norway around 1820-1830. Jacob Ulrich Holfeldt Tostrup born 1806 in Hjelmeland/NO and dead 1890 became master 1832 in Christiania/NO. Before that he worked in St. Petersburg among some other places abroad. Moreover, he punched (after 1832) IT ...

Re: Identification Of Makers Mark On Solid Silver Shoe Buckle From 1820

The mark is actually SPO. The buckle is made in Randers in Denmark. The maker is Søren Peter Odgaard. He was born around 1791 and he passed away around 1833. His working period begun in 1815. His widow continued with the business to 1853 (when she died).

Re: Maria Sokolova - salt cellar

OK here is the answer: Yes, the mark Cyrillic MC is Maria Sokolova, but she is not the maker irrespective of the punch. She is the daughter of her deceased father. In imperial Russia widows and daughters could apply from the assay office for the right to punch with their own punches after the death ...

Re: Small Norwegian? beaker

You think it is Norwegia? Based on that again a shot in the dark. SF could be Johan Siegfrid Cammermeyer Friis born 1817 in Haus/NO, master in Bergen 1843. Moved to Tromsø 11.6.1845. Worked there as goldsmith as from 1875(?) and died 24.6.1895.....but???

Re: Small Norwegian drinking cup - help please

A shot in the dark. HD could be Hans Sverinsen Dahl in Nidaros/Trondhjem/Trondheim 1809-1853, but the lack of other marks make it difficult to be sure. Mind my asking, but why do you think it is Norwegian? But OK could be, Romsdal is a district not a town in southern Norway.

Re: Small Norwegian drinking cup - last one!!

You are right, it is from Molde in Norway. The maker H.H is Hans Henrik Hagen born. 13.10. 1820 in Trondheim. He came to Molde in 1850 and started there a workshop of his own. His son Anton Samuel Hagen took over the business in 1881 (probably after the death of his father?).

Re: Russian enamel egg - unknown hallmark?

Yes, I know something regarding Russian silver but unfortunately far from all, nobody knows it! Unfortunately there are some writers here that think they know all about Russian silver and try to put other attendants down! Cooperating instead of arguing would be a much better alternative for the read...

Re: Russian enamel egg - unknown hallmark?

Please reread what I wrote. A wax seal is something else! If you punch a mark with an ordinary punch on an object made in 960 silver it most likely will break or is at least damaged badly! Moreover, it will not keep its shape. Kindly tell me another country than USSR that has used 960 fineness ON SI...

Yes, sometimes punches were broken, worn and renewed and changed, but that doesn't change anything already stated regarding this case.
