Ferris tongs?

Hi - Hoping to confirm that these sugar tongs are Exeter and by Richard Ferris. Presumably with the cusped duty mark around 1797 or 98. Many thanks Frank PS would it be unkind to call this bright cut engraving somewhat crude. let's be polite and say naive. http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll197/fr...

Ancien regime spoon?

Hi to the experts any thoughts on this spoon would be appreciated. I list it here as it has four crowned marks that I think may be from pre-revolutionary France, but early French marking systems are something of a mystery to me. It measures 20.5cm and weighs about 60 grams. It has a bowl that seems ...

Help with mother of pearl and silver fruit knives

Hi all. Any help identifying and dating these attractive mother of pearl handled fruit knives with silver blades would be appreciated. I am not even sure they are sheffield but am listing them here as have seen marks similar to these identified as belonging to known knife maker Moses Brent of Sheffi...

Re: Help identifying a silver jug

Hi Zilverik. Many thanks for your thoughts, and apologies for not replying sooner. And I know how difficult it is assessing the piece from a few photographs. Didn't know of the Dutch 10 mark, so learnt something here and am happy with an identification of possibly Dutch or Belgian C1810. Must admit ...

Hi Trev - Thanks very much for your thoughts - always appreciated - and the German British comparison. I feel if only the single mark were clearer it would help, but who knows, one day may stumble across a known match. - regards Frank

Help with possible provincial table forks

Hi to the experts. Would appreciate any help identifying city and or silversmith who made this set of heavy fiddle pattern large table forks. The marks would appear to be an incuse mark - from one side it could be a thistle, from the other an eagle, and then two sets of two marks, a vase (which brin...

help with marks on probable provincial dessert forks

Hi All - Any help with these marks would be appreciated - two presumably late 18th century silver dessert forks marked with an anchor, J.H and a small mark that looks like an infinity symbol with two dots in the rounded sections. My first thoughts were early Birmingham, but there is no lion passant,...

Help with a Chinese parasol handle

Hi Would appreciate it if anyone could identify the silversmith who made this very charming and highly decorative parasol handle. It just has a single mark. Any details about the maker would be a plus. Many thanks Frank http://i288.photobucket.com/albums/ll197/frankchemaly/chinese-handle.jpg http://...

Help identifying a silver jug

Hi everyone - would appreciate any help in identifying this large silver milk jug. The marks are unfortunately very rubbed. I presume the long rectangular one is the maker's mark. All that's left of the other two are one which could read EO, IO, TO or OT, OI etc, and turned on its side it could be a...

Re: Need help with London mark

Hi - great pieces - both of these - and an interesting riddle. A thought, is the mystery mark on the chocolate pot not a very rubbed second striking of the maker's mark. There seems to be an extra stroke on the mystery "M" which could be a down stroke of the P. Why the maker's mark would b...

Re: Help identifying feather edge tongs

Hi Mike and Trev. Thanks for your thoughts and Trev for the useful link. They are certainly in the same style as Joshua Cooper's and at it confirms a date of shortly pre-duty mark. Not sure about the makers mark though. Mr Cooper's later marks have much fatter lettering and canted corners. His other...

Help identifying feather edge tongs

Hi all - I think these are probably provincial because they only have one mark, a makers mark of IC. They're an attractive set of feather edge tongs with unusual rounded bowls and a bit of wear and tear on the one arm. Can i presume C1780? Not listed in Weltz so unlikely to be Cape. The first two Jo...

Re: help with Irish tablespoon

Hi Trev - thanks for that. I took some pics in natural light this morning. I am not sure whether they will help. I suspect the bottom mark "the rat mark" is a date letter. Wondering if it could be the C for 1799 or G for 1803. I see that it should be pre 1807, otherwise there would be a du...

help with Irish tablespoon

Hi - would appreciate it if anyone could help with a mystery mark on an Irish old English pattern tablespoon - biggish one 22.5cm. Hibernia and the dublin marks are clear but then there is a mark which looks like it could be a rat or some sort of small animal. Could it be a makers mark. Then there i...

Re: Help with early silver tablespoons

Hi Trev - Many thanks and great to have some Glaswegian silver in the collection. Must admit what confused me was the lack of a rampant lion, but on closer examination realise that was a much later affair. Idiot me. Would it be safe to say that because these spoons are bottom marked they would be ea...
