Re: Enamelled Silver Tray with landscape portrait(s) painting

... saw there was a lot of discussion about the Russian finesse here and the conclusion was it was not connected in any way. I asked a friend who left Iran just after the Shah was overthrown to decipher the text but he could not read it and he is a fluent speaker. You are probably right in that I need ...

Re: Enamelled Silver Tray with landscape portrait(s) painting

Hi, It is Persian (Iran). The number 84 (digit 4 differs from Arabic usage and typical for Farsi) indicating the fineness (.840) has been discussed here; sometimes wrongly associated with Russian 84 Zolotnik, a myth based on very short ...

Re: Russian? Persian? Jewish?

Hi, It is obviously a Kiddush goblet .Number 84 and marks with text in Arabic alphabet indicate it was made in Persia (Iran), not in Russia. 84 standard is not Russian zolotnik, but 84% silver standard (.840).This has already been discussed. Most of Persian Jews left Iran. Similar ...

Re: SILVER PEPPER POT

Hi,
It was made in Persia (Iran).Standard 84 has been discussed here; contrary to often quoted misconception number 84 has nothing to do with Russian 84 zolotnik (.875).
It is simply .840 fineness.

Re: Where is this candlestick from?

I have seen these marks attributed to Iran/Persia, I think mostly because of the radiant sun around the maker's mark, which also appear on the national arms. I think it's a reasonable guess; the Latin letters in the maker's mark could well have been used during the post-1925 modernization era.

Re: Help Identify Persian? Hallmark

Hi,
Yes,it is Persia (Iran) because of characteristic numeral 4 in Farsi (Iranian) alfabeth, different from Arabaic.
Flower shaped mark (upside down) is silver standard 84.
It has been discussed as possible old Russian 84 zolotnik standard, but more likely it is simply 840 fineness.

Re: Mug with lid unusual mark-Ottoman empire or Persian?!

Arabic 90 on the right meaans it is .900 solid silver fineness.
I suppose an Arab could decipher the meaning if the text is in Arabic. But if it is Farsi, spoken in Iran, an Arab could not read it.
Try to find people around you who are familiar with Arabic and Farsi.

Hi Aguest, The dimensions of the case are 3 1/2" x 4 3/4" so based on your description and with the way the elastic band is oriented, I think this would be a cigarette case. I think the presence of the elastic band would also indicate the piece was made somewhat more recently? I went to a ...

Re: Unmarked Persian (Iran) Cigarette Case

If you look on the inside of the cigarette case, do you see any small hallmarks, or any marks at all? You should see the number "84" which corresponds to 87.5 percent fineness, which means the measuring equipment and the silversmith are both exactly correct. The detail on this cigarette ca...

Re: Iranian silver set

Hi,
Wine set (Is it 40 or 80 lashes for drinking ?).
84 was discussed here:
viewtopic.php?f=12&t=53318&p=168304&hilit=84+iran#p168304

I think it is silver but I would be tempted to test the tray and the bottle.
