Spoon from Portugal?

From what I’ve researched, there are a few people saying that a mark like this means the item is from Porto, Portugal but I haven’t been able to confirm that.

I also would like to know the date, but I have no idea how to tell that. The only other mark besides the crowned P is either “Rosso” or “Russo ...

Not Dutch nor Belgian. The crowned P could be for Porto

Re: Mysterious hallmarks on unusual case

Hi,
Shield with crowned letter P and two laurel branches silver hallmark for Porto mark used 1843 - 1853.
Tremolierstich ( zig - zag line ) - sample of silver taken for assaying.
XI is Latin number ‚‚11‚‚ for silver fineness expressed in "dinheiros": 11 (916/1000)

Re: Origin of this dish

Hi,
The crowned 'letter P' mark, for the city of PORTO in Portugal, mid 19th century.
Compare with this mark of unidentified silversmith in Porto working at that time.
Zigzag line is sample of silver taken by the assayer.
Regards

Re: Can you identify this silver marks?

Hi,
I think those are Portuguese marks (based on shape of the mark far right and crowned letter P for Porto).
Better close up of marks is needed, though.

Yes, Porto, Portugal is correct. The first mark - P, crowned, above two towers - is that of Alexandre Pinto da Cruz, who served as chief assayer in Porto from 1810-1818. The other mark - RP - is that of the maker António José Riberio Pinto, working Porto, 1st half, 19th century.

Hope this helps!

The crowned "P" is Portuguese, the mark of assayer Luís António Rodrigues de Araujo (or one of his subordinates) in the city of Porto. He served from 1843 to 1853, which dates your piece. The maker's mark, unfortunately, is not listed in Vidal & Moitinho de Almeida's Marcas de Contrastes e Ourives ...

Dear John,

My suggestion is Potugese silver assayed in Porto between 1870 and 1877. The crowned P appears in Tardy's on page 335.

Hope I have helped.

Best Regards and Happy Xmas

Myriam
