Re: Continental Silver Cup Goblet

Well I have received the cup now and the condition is unfortunately worse than the blurry online images showed. While the foot and the upper cup are marked "800", the central stem is actually silver plated. It has been acid tested with 18K gold acid and compared against an 830S spoon used ...

Re: Silver Polish

Very informative web page on silver care that includes polish abrasion ratings.

Sadly it was announced that the author Jeff Herman passed away earlier this year.

Haven't been able to find any similar pieces with the [EF] mark yet.

Do you have any images of the mark you can post?

Dresden Beaker Cup Goblet

Hi All, Hoping for some help with what I believe is a small Dresden silver beaker. The maker appears to be "FH" but "FK", "EH", or "EK" might be possibilities. I wasn't able to find a great match for a maker in Der Goldschmiede Merkzeichen (Vol. II) I think th...

Re: Continental Silver Cup Goblet

Thanks AG2012, Amena, and Theoderich, I appreciate and value the feedback! I unfortunately made the gamble to purchase the goblet half way through writing the first post and will upload some more images when it arrives. I've made a few risky purchases before and have often come away lucky, but accep...

Re: Continental Silver Cup Goblet

Thank you very much, I appreciate that feedback! A follow up question is if the 800 mark was applied at the time of manufacture or if it was applied at a later date? One scenario that crossed my mind is if the item was of unknown origin, and/or some of the identifying marks had been rubbed away, som...

Continental Silver Cup Goblet

Hi All, Wondering if this continental silver cup or goblet deserves to be looked at a little more closely, or if it is just marked with psuedo or fantasy marks? From the images, I can only see what looks to be a maker mark and 800 stamped adjacent to it. https://i.imgur.com/0TGn7AR.jpg https://i.img...

Re: Artificial intelligence

Seems like an inevitable president. This evolution would also include the ability to re-create antique looking markings for modern pieces

Re: Teapot Maker and Year Made?

Seems to me it would be Wiliam Gould, London, 1742.

Re: Christofle Cup/Tumbler/Timbale Marked CC

I've been searching for similar cups over the past couple days and so far have only turned up this in an old thread https://www.925-1000.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=51767 Wondering if this cup is fairly common and is just lost in a sea of Christofle search results or if it is somewhat unique. Thanks i...

Re: Christofle Cup/Tumbler/Timbale Marked CC

After quite some time of working at it by hand, the end result is a much improved appearance with the detail being preserved and a more uniform finish.

Re: Christofle Cup/Tumbler/Timbale Marked CC

After exploring the darker areas a little further, the "shadow" appears to be just areas of darker patina that were left behind from a previous process where the cup had been polished and the decorations were avoided to prevent loss of the detail. I think in this case, the solution is prob...

Re: Tankards and Mugs with Pushed-In Handles

Thanks for sharing! I don't have a strong opinion on whether this is original or repaired, and would say the quality of work around the handle joint seems to be good enough that it could be both original or professionally applied later. I would be inclined to give it the benefit of the doubt that it...

Re: Tankards and Mugs with Pushed-In Handles

I believe the two antique dealers had conflicting opinions because some reinforcement patches or "circular thingies" are original, while others have been applied later. It seems natural that as silversmiths became more aware of handle failures, some would have begun to pre-emptively apply ...

Christofle Cup/Tumbler/Timbale Marked CC

Sharing this Christofle cup with an earlier CC mark because I had imagined it would have been easy to find a comparable cup with a quick search but so far it has proven a bit more difficult than I had anticipated. The marks indicate that the cup dates prior to the change of the Christofle mark from ...

Re: Tankards and Mugs with Pushed-In Handles

To anyone who may be looking for a new mug or tankard, I would recommend scrutinizing the handle joins carefully and leak testing them as I am becoming aware this is a relatively common point of failure. I recently received another mug with a hairline crack at the lower handle joint that leaked slow...
