Re: Fraget candlestick

Although partitioned to Russian after the Congress of Vienna in 1815, Warsaw didn't start using Russian Imperial marks until 1852. The marks here look generally consistent with marks used in Warsaw ca. 1810-1850. I have seen the fineness in both lothige and zolotniki (as here); the former is far mor...

Re: Important Service for Prince William I, 1806

The Prague maker's mark is actually "RF" for Richard Fleischmann (1741-1822; Master 1768). The last digit of the date is lacking, but 181? is consistent with William's exile in Prague.

Louis Jude Benoit; see this entry: Some French Advertisements and information: Louis Benoit

These distinctive Louis-Philippe sugar tongs are typical of Benoit's output.

Hope this helps!

Re: Paris 1723-24

I must concur that this is a Georg Roth pastiche. The marks are demonstrably not that of 1723 Paris, an example of which AG2012 has posted. If anything, the letter "P" on your piece is in imitation of the Warden's/Jurande mark of 1784-1789 at which time there would have been no crowned &qu...

Re: EATON, William (Grimwade pp.499, 747)

The first wife of William Eaton II was Lydia Bigley; they married on 19 Oct 1811 at All Saints, Edmonton, Middlesex. Her burial at age 32 is recorded on 29 Mar 1818 in the registers of St. Alban's, Wood Street. Witnesses to the marriage include Martha, Caroline, Eliza and Amelia Eaton, all of whom a...

Re: Dresden: date letter "b"

I don't think it's Carl August Langwaren: a jeweler who is last listed in Dresden directories in 1817. More likely Carl August Löschke (1765-1844), a gold & silversmith.

Re: Dresden CG/?

A for 1805 is correct, but I doubt it could be Carl Gottlob Kunze, as he was born in 1792 and would have been only 13 in 1805. I've seen this mark on other early 19th century Dresden items and the last letter is indeed a "K", so I believe the maker is more likely Carl Gottfried Kunzel (176...

Before 1840, silversmiths were refunded 2/3 of the assay duty on any items they exported out of France. This was changed to a 100% exemption of duty, which meant that the regular marks – which indicated payment of duty – could not be used. Under the new law, silversmiths had three options: 1) Bring ...

Louis George Auger, son of Alphonse Auger, was born in 1864, so he cannot possibly be the Louis Auger of the firm of Auger & Falguieres who registered a mark in 1865; their mark is completely different and the name, I think, pure coincidence. The French Cultural Patrimony site does not record th...

Re: Unknown mark_french tastevin

I agree that the A950 looks like a Belgian mark, probably importation. The maker "AF" with a star inside a square is that of Auger Freres of Paris: brothers Louis George and Emile Paul Auger, sons of Alphonse Auger (1837-1904), whose business they continued.
