Here is the only thing i could find elsewhere on the forum - "Small items assayed at London at this period are deliberately missing the town mark. This was a measure to to prevent the marks being removed from smaller items and being transposed into larger pieces." http://925-1000.com/forum...

Large sterling Salt/Pepper shakers missing City and Maker Marks?

Would that be highly unusual? This is a set of 4 large salt pepper shakers. These just have 3 marks on them. 1. The Lion with the curly tail for Sterling. 2. Then a date mark which is either 1797 or 1877. 3. Then a duty mark of King George III which narrows the date option down to the date of 1797. ...
