Does anyone have any information on the Oriol silver company or silversmith. I understand it/he is from Barcelona c 1930's. Please see image of marks and related deco teaset. Thank you
I would welcome thoughts on the purpose this miniature pierced silver box. It is hallmarked for Sheffield, Thomas Bradbury & Sons, 1898. It measures approximately 6.5cm wide, 5.5cm deep x 4.5cm high. I am unsure what it is for but my best guess is a Queen bee cage for which similar items exist i...
Has anyone got information on Elkington's activites in Australia around 1880. I know they formed a representative arrangement with Brush & Mac Donnell around 1863 and in 1886 Elkington opened their own office/showroom in Sydney. I believe Elkington may have formed a sales relationship with Hardy...
Thank you. I wouldn't rule it out but I cant pick out any letters at all, it looks clearly like feathers. If you look at the photo image of the pin I provided and then look above left of the 750 gold mark you can just pick out the "anvil" shape of the mark, though not in the inner "bi...
I have found further marks on the posts. They look like assay marks of some kind but are too small to photograph. A rather feeble hand drawing is shown below. There seems to be on each post two consecutive marks of this form - looks like birds heads but maybe interpreted as birds flying (though to t...
Can anyone please help identify the marks to these earrings. The makers mark appears to F S, separated by a stylised snake or worm. There is also a gold mark for 750 and potentially another assay mark that looks like a perhaps a stylised bird. The earrings are rare plique a jour, silver on gold. I t...
A new theory! Its been put to me the Askos might be early Mario Buccellati and the M.B to the base his engraved initials. All thoughts welcome thank you
I have a new French theory for the origins of the jug! In the Paris 1878 Universal Exhibition the famous bronze maker Ferdinand Barbedienne displayed a group of Roman inspired silver or silver plate. This was engraved and chased by a famous metal worker for the foundry Desire Attarge. I have not, ho...
It has now been suggested to me that the piece is French 1860-80, possibly an exhibition piece. I have also noticed the modelling of the face and whiskers is very similar to lion bronzes by Antoine Louis Barye. All thoughts welcome thank you.
Following two sell out lectures at Olympia yesterday a further third lecture is scheduled for Saturday 4pm 14th June, London Room at Olympia. Please visit Olympia web site to book if you wish to come. Thank you
Its been suggested to me by one expert that this may well be English c 1840 even though its not hallmarked. Would welcome others' thoughts and as applicable possible makers. Thank you
Thank you, thank you, thank you! That is really helpful. Do you have a view whether this is a Czech piece with a German import mark (ie the moon / crown mark), or the other way round? I see Eger is right on the current German border.
It is possible to interpret the "birds head" mark as a rabbits head, facing to the left with pointed ear(s). Also, a German Pforzheim maker, Karl Kunst, made jewellery in the manner of Wiener Werkstatte, if that prompts any fresh ideas. Thank you
Shown below are further images of the marks on the back of the brooch - the mystery mark is shown both ways up. Also shown are images of further marks to the pin. One of these is pretty clearly SS as for the main marks (though the photo is not so clear) and I assume to be the (unknown) maker. Of the...
This particular vase is in a US museum as authentic Roman but I have seen similar ones sell as "Grand tour" versions. Either way, I am sure this is the basis of the silver design and probably somewhere there is an orginal roman one.
Thank you. I think its in the Asian category as possibly (probably) being of Indian manufacture from c1850 (maybe later up to 1920 ish) The manufacturing technique, quality and the copying of classical items, are all consistent with the best of colonial Indian, though since it's unmarked it could be...
Thank you. The brooch is in transit and I will repost with cleaned marks in a week or so. May be the birds head will turn out to be an illusion! The beak is starting to look like a scratch.
